| Why? and Vitamins? First of all, something really erked me today. In my social studies class, they mentioned something about eating dogs. The reaction from my class- AW! Thats so mean! Ew, thats gross! How could you do that! That sad! My question is why? Why are they fine with eating a pig or a cow but no, eating a dog is terrible? How are they different? Has anyone else notcied this And...My sister is a veggie to. She had problems with iron, so the Doctor said to take a multi-vitamin. But now my mom wants me to! Is it really neccesary? I am not allowed to be a vegan (until I am in College, then I will), so just a veggie, but do I need to take a vitamin? My mom is all convinced, I am trying to tell her I dont need to, and if I have problems, then we can talk! I need back up though! Please help! |

| Re: Why? and Vitamins? If you are eating a perfectly balanced diet, then vitamins are not necessary, but I think the majority of us, vegetarians included, don't get all the vitamins and minerals we need on a daily basis, so why not take a daily multi-vitamin? It can only help you health-wise, right? I'm a vegetarian and I take a multi-vitamin daily with iron along with calcium. |

I asked my auntie the other day that if she would eat a dog, I got "Eww....so much of an animal lover you are, thats plain sick!" I asked her about pig "Well, these animals are bred to be eaten, if we didnt eat them they would be over crowded" by now, I turned smart arse on her and said "If we didnt eat meat then people wouldnt mass breed all the animals for eating so we wouldnt have the problem!". LOL. My mum was sat eating a chicken dinner the other day and I asked her why should she eat that chicken and not eat her owl? In my eyes chickens, goats, sheep, cows etc are companions. I prefer a vegetarian diet more then I ever did a diet with meat.RE the vitamins - I have to take one every day aswell - why not? I have to admit I dont take one every day coz I forget hehe. But I take one at least every 3 days and cant be bothered to put up a fight anymore. |

I to, see farm animals as compions. I own 2 goats, and they may not be mans best friend, but they sure are mine. One walks on a leash, follows me, helps me do things (herding the other goat, carrieing stuff...). And my pig...smartest thing ever. Cant do anything with her and she cant leave the paddock because she is to strong, and we dont want her to get hit. But she can sit, and much more fun then a dog. In hot summer day if yuo splash her with water, she will splash you back, and if I play with my hands in it, the playys with her snout. She also loves to blow bubbbles in it, and roll in her mudpit. Those are companion animals to me. Holly, the pig, is the one who made me be a vegetarian. |

| Re: Why? and Vitamins? Don't take an iron supplement or multi-vitamin containing iron unless your doctor does tests and sees that your iron count is low. It can be dangerous to take too much iron, the only exception being if you are female and on your period or if you know you have had little to no iron rich foods recently. It normally is not a good idea to take one on a daily basis unless you have a low iron count. Multivitamins in general though aren't going to harm you but I'd encourage you to read up on nutrition and the foods you eat as it's much better to get it directly from the food themselves or from enriched foods such as soya milks |

| Re: Why? and Vitamins? You know, I never wanted to be vegetarian because even though I am an animal lover, it won't stop animals from being killed just because I'm "torturing" myself by not eating burgers....but I just might try it....probably not forever, but atleast try it. Problem is, there will always be a large amount of people who want to kill animals to eat. I also believe that we were meant to eat animals, which is why I'm not a veg. but still, I think I might try it for a month or two....anyways sorry for that interuption. |

I also got asked "But, if we didnt eat them there is no point for them" and I turned round and said "And how does the world benefit from HUMANS?" I got "Humans have to care for the domesticated animals" so of course I said "If humans were never part of the planet there would be no such thing as a domesticated animal!". LOL. |

| Re: Why? and Vitamins? When I'm older I think I'm going to have a few farm animals as pets, just to advocate people that what they're eating is actually an intelligent being and makes a great companion. As for vitamins: completely unnecessary if you have a well-planned diet. If you're not that careful you can just take a multivitamin to make sure you're getting everything you need. I'm very limited with this because- and you can laugh if you want- I can't swallow pills. So when I go vegan in a few years, unless I overcome my fear of choking, I'll have to stick with other forms of vitamins.... I don't currently take anything now but as a vegan I'd definitely want to. A great way to get a little extra iron every time you heat up something on the stove is to use an cast-iron pan. A little iron is released through the pan to the food every time you use it. Also you should use the stove or oven more than the microwave- using microwaves has actually been proven to be potentially harmful, and eliminates most of the nutrients of the food. Then again, cooking food is considered "killing" it and any raw food is the best way to go when you want all the nutrients. |
