| 'My Year of Meats' by Ruth Ozeki Has anyone read 'My Year of Meats' by Ruth Ozeki? It's a novel about a woman who is commissioned to work on a tv programme (sponsored by the meat industry) during which she travels around the US interviewing families about their favourite meat dishes. The basic aim of the show is to send out the message that meat is an integral part of wholesome family life.
However, as she's working on the show, she finds out more about the meat industry, especially regarding the use of synthetic hormones on cattle and the long term implications for people eating that meat.
It's not just about meat, although obviously that's the primary theme. And it's a really good book as well as giving an interesting take on the meat industry. But it does make you think, and I'm sure it certainly contributed towards my husband's decision to go veggie! |
