Wasteing food =(

I went vegetarian about 2 weeks ago.

I had some frozen weight watchers meals in the fridge from before, meat ones, that I eventually fed my boyfriend disguised as 'real' food. I also had some cans of soup that had meat in it, which I donated away cause noone in my house would have eaten them. It's just me, my boyfriend, and my picky daughter.

Last night my parents gave me some turkey burgers to bring home to my boyfriend. They said if he didnt want them just toss them. My boyfriend didnt want them. in my past non-veg life, I loved turkey burgers, almost as much as I cannot STAND wasteing food. I was torn. They are still sitting in the fridge. My daughter wont eat them either.

What would you do? Just toss them? I don't see how that is helping the cause I am trying to persue by not eating meat. However, I made a commitment to myself and would feel bad breaking it.

Re: Wasteing food =(

Read this really great article from Bruce Friedrich (a key PETA employee):

GoVeg.com // Get Active // Effective Advocacy // Personal Purity vs. Effective Advocacy

I think he does a great job putting issues like these into perspective.

Re: Wasteing food =(

I think that's a really good article. I'd probably eat them. You won't be saving turkeys by throwing them away and I think at least they are being put to use rather than being chucked away having died for nothing.
Or maybe you could give them to a homeless shelter or something like that?

Re: Wasteing food =(

I agree with those who like the article.

As for your turkey burgers -- if you can find someone non-vegetarian to give them to, either friends or soup kitchen, that would be best because it will mean they won't have to kill another animal that they might otherwise have killed for that meal.

If not, personally I would eat them. But I'm only "semi" vegetarian, and do eat meat products in situations like this, and in some social situations.

Re: Wasteing food =(

I would find someone to give them to, or give them back. There is always someone who will eat them. If you want to be vegetarian you need to get used to passing up food offers. I get them all the time, "Here Allie, take this home for your grandparents". Its aggrivating. I usually refuse it unless I know 100% sure that they will eat it.

You could always bury it - it is, after all, a dead body.

I'm sorry I am not an extremeist.

Thank you for the great artical. I can't give something cooked to the shelter, they will only take canned foods. I will just be more careful what I bring in my home from now on, and if my boyfriend wants meat he can have it himself.

Alright, good, I know people on here are very very passionate about certain things (like you in the "inside Petco" thread, haha) , and I didnt want to take it as a joke and have that not be intended.

Re: Wasteing food =(

If your boyfriend was easily fooled into thinking Weight Watchers was "normal food", you could chop up the burgers and add them to a spaghetti sauce or make turkey tacos.

I love that article. I just wish I had been the author. It would be so cool to write something like that, that people really find inspirational.

Re: Wasteing food =(

Love the article. I was getting discouraged there the more research I did on my agricultural law journal note (Colony Collapse Disorder and how the government can help solve it), and the more I learn about honeybees, their treatment, and the fact that one third of our diet is pollinated by them. I felt like that no matter what I did it wasn't going to help.
