Absolutely. As I said in the 'Vegetarian' thread (3rd page), ideally I would be vegan as I don't like contributing to the way animals are treated. Even on the happy all-organic farms where animals are treated pretty well, they still wind up at the same slaughterhouse as the others when they don't produce enough eggs/ milk etc to make money. However, at this moment in time it's not right for me - I'd be depriving myself of things I like and want by going vegan and it may seem selfish, but I don't want to do that. It's just not the right way for me. I've been a happy vegetarian for years, and not wanted meat at all, but spent several years when I was younger not eating meat when I would have actually liked to. If I'm going to change something these days, it's because it all clicks in to place and I want to do it 100%. Maybe one day it will be something I want to do and I won't see it as a sacrifice, but for now I'm happy enough that I'm a vegetarian and won't beat myself up about eating dairy and eggs.

Plus I also have a wheat allergy, so if I went vegan too, no one would ever invite me for dinner!

Re: Getting protein

Hey guys, its HUMMUS! Humus (one "m") is organic decaying matter on the ground. I personally won't eat humus, but I love hummus.

I eat a variety of nuts and whole grains. I'll drink nut milk, but abhor soy milk. I like all kinds of beans. Black beans are my favorite. I do eat some veggie burgers, sausage, etc., but my favorites are marinated tofu (great snack, on sandwiches, on salads, stir fry, etc.) and tofu egg salad. It took me awhile to find products that I liked since I don't like most soy products and plain tofu can mistify beginners. I invested in a couple of good cookbooks, a magazine subscription to VT magazine, and watched a bit of Mollie Katzen on PBS. Through trial and error, I found what worked for me.

Re: Getting protein

Thanks for all the suggestions! I find the chocolate Silk to be delicious, and the plain isn't bad either. They also have a vanilla, but I found that to be a bit odd-tasting--I don't like plain vanilla drinks, though, so that is probably just me. It was also a bit too sweet.

I totally agree with going vegan, but for now I'm happy with just being vegetarian. I'm not getting too much support from my family right now, but I think peta and this site are helping. I'm never going to fall back, though. I'm way too stubborn and besides, I know exactly how meat comes to be now. In fact, the chicken the rest of my family had last night just looked disgustingly pale and, well--dead.

Does anybody know where the protein in "Balance" energy bars comes from? I know that the protein in Cliff Bars is vegan, but I'm not sure about these. Thanks!

Re: Getting protein

Balance Bars - [font=arial][size=2]Protein Blend (soy protein isolate, calcium caseinate, toasted soy beans, whey protein concentrate), high fructose corn syrup, honey, cocoa powder, almond pieces, fructose, high maltose corn syrup, ground almonds.

Looks like its safe.

I havent been able to go vegan yet either. I'd like to, but you know the commercials "Oh, the power of cheese." Yeah that's me. Plus if I did that, I'd only have pancakes and hashbrowns left for breakfast at Denny's. My friends already say I can't eat anywhere with them as it is.

Every place I get it from seems to spell it differently - humous, hummus, hummous. I started using the different spellings on a rotation basis so I'd at least be right every now and then - don't think I've ever used the humus spelling, so at least that's something. I'll stick to hummus now anyway!

Re: Getting protein

Thanks a TON, Chris! I thought it was, but I was just checking to make sure.

I agree with you on the cheese--that's a toughie.
