Question Good pretend chicken?

I had a wonderful dish at a restaraunt. I asked what was in it and the lady told me that it was soy protien from Japan. Well, it was really firm, but still smooth. I tried using extra firm tofu, but it was still a little too squishy. It tasted like a mix between chicken and some other thing. It had the consistancy of meat, but had a light taste.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a pretend-meat that fit those requirements? I'm hoping to be able to make a dish similar to it. I love that place, but it's a bit of a drive to make dinner for work every night!
I'm going to the grocery store tomorrow to try a new non-meat product and wouldn't mind some help finding the perfect one for me.

Re: Good pretend chicken?

The best "pretend" meat I've ever tried were Tempeh burgers from the local grocery store. I can't remember the name of the company that makes them, but it was the only Tempeh product there. I'll try and find out this morning and get back to you! Tempeh is made from fermented soybeans, and it is firmer and has more texture than tofu. I've also heard of Seitan, which is made from wheat gluten, however I haven't tried it. I find that in grocery stores around here, they don't keep all vegetarian products in one place--soy hot dogs are in with the deli stuff and then vegan cheese is with the organic stuff etc--very confusing when you're in a hurry! Take a look in all these areas of your grocery store, you might find something you missed before.

I personally don't eat a lot of pretend meats because of the salt content, but those Tempeh burgers...yum. You might also consider freezing your tofu before using it, as this apparently makes it firmer. You could also email the restaurant and ask them to give you the name of the product they use. They might not want to give it to you, but they might too, if they get the impression you'll keep going back there. Worth a shot. Good in your search for the Perfect Pretend Meat!

Re: Good pretend chicken?

I sent them an e-mail, and they said it was a soy protein from Japan. Didn't tell me a brand though.
And I will try and locate all the different kinds of thinigs around the grocery store, I know what you mean about it being scattered. The Amy's food is in with the sections that it fits in, like the pizzas are in with pizza or the snacks in with the other frozen snack foods.
I'll definitly look for the Tempeh. I hope they have it around me!
