Chitin in yarn, what do you all think?

As many of you know I have been on my search for suitable cruelty free yarns. Now that I am attempting knitting again this search has been ramped up a bit.

I have been looking around on the South West Trading Company website and have noticed a fiber called chitin. I did some research and this is what I found.

Now I don't like that it's made out of shells but I do like that they are essentially taking garbage and making it into usefull stuff. Stuff that is a lot easier on the enviroment then acrylic and other oil based yarns.

I'm really liking the idea behind the South West Trading company. I like that they make various forms of trash (including by products from the tofu industry) and make it into yarn. I'd also like to vote with my dollar and make more of a demand for corn, bamboo, and soy yarns and the more blends they make the more projects I can use them in. Instead of using 100% wool for something I might be able to substitute with a blend and make less demand for wool and more for soy.

I was wondering what all you other crafty animal loving people think out there. It seems that when it comes to crafts and thier impact on the Earth it's a little less black and white then when it comes to food and ready made clothing.

I too am a crafty animal loving person and I love the idea of using waste and turning it into something people can use to make stuff. I don't knit but I'm thinking of learning to crochet so I'd love to buy cruelty free yarn. Right now I try to buy as much of my craft supplies from our local thrift store.

I think the soyasilk sounds amazing - totally green, and animal free entirely!
