Turkey slaughter house

Eek! In september, I visited an organic turkey farm - there were thousands of them in the fields/in barns (which I cleaned!) and I asked to go back in December to visit the slaughtering. I just came back from it and am astounded! Since November 29th, they've slaugtered 45,000 turkeys just for Christmas. This is just one abbatoir - think of the numbers being killed across the country. I had a tour and it honestly just seemed like a production line. No remorse or feelings towards the animals that they were eviscerating and they even had songs playing in the background. All in all, it was better than I thought - less grusome than the videos I have seen on PETA. Very hygenic and the turkeys go through minimal stress since the abbatoir is on site. Also, they sit in a darkened pen beforehand and walk towards their fate - no one touches them or pushed them into the room.

I will be asking to visit them in June where they receive the turkeys at 1 day old. They also de beak them there, so that's something to see I suppose.

Eww... Why are they de-beaking them? thats werid or do they like to put animals in pain?...

They Debeak them to keep them from pecking each other to death , when you crowd young birds they tend to peck each other alot and can maim and or kill one another. Debeaking is removing the tip of the beak not the entire beak.

Piglet, you use the word "abattoir" as if this was a person - when I looked it up its another term for slaughter house and also a french term meaning to strike down, I am a little confused - is there another meaning for it?

Eh? In england, abattoir means slaughterhouse. I'm supporting nothing, it's just work experience for university.

To be honest, the turkeys are free to roam acres of land and fields. They are only closed away at night in huge sheds due to the foxes. I don't understand for them to de-beak. According to them, it doesn't hurt but I guess I'll have to wait and see.

I'm thankful that I got to see one of the nicest and humane farms/abattoir. God knows what happens in the others

If you want to study to be a vet over here you pretty much have to have experience of visiting/observing the slaughter process as most vets don't get the option of opting out of visiting them during their professional life.

Really? Good Lord. I have never heard anything like that in America....though it may exist......debeaking just sounds terrible. I'm glad to hear they free range though.

It exists here in America and is Standard Practice. Debeaking is the Norm for big farms. It is and has been standard practice for centuries.

Debeaking is not removing the entire beak- they couldn't eat or drink if that was done- it's just removing the sharp point.
