vegan & going gluten-free

Between this and another site, I chose to go vegetarian last Thanksgiving. I am still lacto-ovo because I cook with the occasional dairy & egg product, but have been phasing that out too over the past 2 months. I've only got a few recipes to find work-able substitutes for before I am fully vegan.

My son was recently diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, and between that and a suspected issue with gluten in myself, we will both be going gluten-free on the first of November. (my son is omni; he eats meat about once per week)

Has anyone had any experience with being vegan AND gluten-free at the same time? I've been all over the celiac websites and have found hundreds of recipes & alternate brands. But what are the nutritional implications? Should I be watching for anything specifically in either of our diets, or supplimenting anything? Has anyone done this, or heard of someone who has?!? I'd love to hear from anyone who has any information on this.
love,
mom

I wish I could help you. But all I can say is good luck.

Do you have a Whole Foods in the USA? Whole Foods is my hard to find food mecca.

Boy, that sounds like it could be pretty tricky. I think you should consult a liscensed dietician on this one, especially where a growing child is concerned.

Re: vegan & going gluten-free

My son has asperger's. I tried the gluten and casein free diet. I found a little bit of benfit from it. It was just very hard for me to maintain. I live on an island with a very small health food store. I hope you have places easier to shop. I warn you it does get expensive. You can PM me if you want. I'll be glad to help anyway I can. We have had our diagnosis for about 4 years.
