My husband still can't understand how I can burn microwave popcorn when there is a popcorn button on the microwave. I tell him it's a very complicated process that he just wouldn't understand. I have been pretty much banned from the kitchen when he is around after starting the toaster on fire by cooking some pop tarts too long (how was I supposed to know the frosting would spontaneously combust?)

Re: Soy milk

I am sorry this comesat your expense, but I do feel better. I just made so oatmeal and tea without any problems

Read the label on your poptarts. Last box I bought had geletin I would think chocolate would be fine.

My husband now buys himself treats with geletin in them so I won't eat them. He also tells me goodies have geletin in them just so I won't eat them. He's such a meanie.

Actually I just made a mean bowl of frosted flakes. As for the poptarts they were for the kids and they were chocolate ones. I have avoided frosted poptarts ever since.

Re: Soy milk

I used to pretty much only drink soymilk. So Good is the best brand I've ever had, and I believe it is only sold in Canada (at least I know it's not sold anywhere I've been in California). The chocolate and the strawberry So Good are like heaven. And the icecream...

Unfortunately, my pregnancy has turned me off of soymilk for now. I can't stomach it. I can, however, drink milk. I drink about 2 glasses of farm-fresh organic milk a day. I think that since I don't eat any meat, I am craving the fat from milk (sounds weird, doesn't it?).

Re: Soy milk

The thing about milk and eggs is that they could be harvested humanely, if only people took the time and stopped caring so much about money. But that would solve a lot of problems in the world and doesn't seem like it's gonna happen any time soon.

Kudos to anyone who can go vegan. Try as I might eggs and milk tend to creap up in a lot of things I buy. I also tend to eat an egg when I am feeling icky just in case I have missed something in my diet. I am not the best cook or dietary planner.

Re: Soy milk

My husband is a vegan, and has been for 7 years. He is also a marathon runner, baseball player, distance swimmer, and baseball player. To keep himself healthy, he drinks at least one full 2 litre soymilk a day. Sometimes 2. Soymilk is almost like taking a vitamin, as it has so much nutrients in it.

Re: Soy milk

I know! I take it for it's extra iron. Between a serving of soy milk and my breakfast cereal I get 40% of my iron for the day. But that must get pricey buying a 2L of soy milk a day. NoFrills has it on for $2.49/2L I think now. When they first did the price drop they were sold out. Unless it was you that went to No Frills that day and cleaned them out :P They don't have strawberry though.

Which flavour does he drink? I bought the So Good Omega in Vanilla this week. Very yummy in breakfast cereal.

Re: Soy milk

I drink Silk. It's awful when you first try, just try to gulp it down, and pretty soon you'll love it.
Oh, and I found SILKnog at a grocery store-it's really good. The only thing that makes it semm un-eggnogish is that it's a little thin, but it's still really good. AND I compared the nutrition of the soynog to eggnog. The soynog had 2g fat per serving, the eggnog had nine, with 5g saturated fat. The silk had no cholosterol, the eggnog had 95mg. Silknog is much healthier, as well as nice3r to animals!

The organic kind is not supposed to be "pus milk". It gets pus in it when the cows are treated inhumanely and pumped full of growth hormone and antibiotics (they get infections from their poor treatment), and regular milk is usually full of pus. Thats not what I drink. Organic milk is good, not pus.

Re: Soy milk

Sabriel - he drinks the Omega too, but I've never see Vanilla Omega before. I usually buy 8-12 containers of soymilk a week. He is also a big chocolate fan. I enjoy the strawberry and the fat-free. We don't have a No Frills by our place, so we have to pay $3.59 for each container. I wish it was $2.49. (Do you know of any No Frills by the Bloor/Yonge intersection?)

Re: Soy milk

Hmmm, the closest ones I can think of are Parlament and Dundas (Not the best No Frills), Keele and Dundas and Landsdown and Dundas (all approx BTW).

All you will find downtown are Dominions and Loblaws. They are very pricey. It may be worth it to go a little out of your way.

It still doesn't have nearly the vitamins, minerals and all the other good stuff soy milk has. Believe me, even before I went veg I switched over to boost my iron consumption. The Omega soy milk is really good for you. It has flax seed oil in it. I have has flax seed on stuff before. I prefer having it mixed in with my milk rather then sprinkled over my cereal.

To anyone who cooks with soy milk: What soy milk do you use? I want to reduce my milk consumption even more, as I am feeling healthier this week after finally switching over to only soy milk for drinking and cereal. What kind of soy milk do you use in Kraft dinner and other things that say "add milk"? Just plain soy milk? I would like to get down to only using a 500ml carton of milk rather then a 1L. I know I can't eliminate milk from my house as my husband uses it on the weekend for breakfast, but I would like to slowly but surely eliminate it from my diet.

Re: Soy milk

I dont really like soy milk...It has a bad taste for me, and I've tried tons of types, Rice Dream, and others, all vanilla and sometimes chocolate (I hate plain) but I've never heard of stawberry soy milk, or egg nog type (I LOVE egg nogg!) I'll look into those!

I never drink milk alot, but if I'm dying of hunger and I've got no food (like yesterday) having milk once in a blue moon doesn't hurt (Though it certinly doesn't help)

Re: Soy milk

I'll have milk if it's the only thing in the house, but I can't drink it plain anymore.I am used to my flavoured soy milk now.

But I do try to avoid running out of soy milk.

Re: Soy milk

Thanks for the info on the No Frills. Those are pretty far for groceries though, so I am stuck with Valu-Mart (unless, of course, I can get my husband to pull around a couple of hand carts).

I use the So Good Omega for cooking. Just substitute the milk for soy. I have also used the cheap soymilk you can find in Chinatown. It tastes really nasty (it isn't sweetened) but it works great in breads and cakes. I have more difficulty with substituting the eggs. I have egg substitute, but it doesn't keep the baking together as well. I have also tried applesauce and bananas. Sometimes they work, and sometimes they don't.

Substituting is kind of fun and adventurous. Generally, we have to substitute pretty much everything in the recipe. No milk, eggs, butter, refined sugars or wheat for us.

Re: Soy milk

I am a truely awful cook. I will have to take this substituting in tiny baby steps. But at least it's a start. Meat substitution wasn't too hard once I got the hang of it.
