I noticed in a few recent posts people talking about vegetarians eating dairy products, specifically cheese, but not anything with gelatin in it. I just wondered how many of you know about rennet in cheese? Here is some info on it for those of you who aren't aware of why most cheese shouldn't be considered vegetarian any more than marshmallows or Jello. http://www.vegsoc.org/info/cheese.html |

Ah, but some cheese plants do not use rennet. It is harder to come by these days. I know for sure Black Diamond Marbel cheese does not contain rennet. They use bacteria to curdle the cheese instead. Look for cheese made with microbial enzyme. It's just another case of reading the label before you buy. Heck my husband and I have bougth plenty of things we did not know contained animals products. Pasta sauce and hamburger helper (Strogenoff flavour) are the most recent flubs (causing before dinner menu havoc). I just remember to be more careful next time around and my husband ends up eating all of the offending product. |

On the cheese we buy, the label actually says "Vegetarian". So no problems with rennet! |

Not everything that is vegetarian here states it so I read the labels to see if I lucked out. |
