I really like the piggies with the full Rosette kind of hair but so far every one that I've seen have red eyes. Is this typical?

It depends on the genetics, I had an abyssinian and her eyes were black.

I guess I'll just have to keep my eyes open for one with black eyes.

Definitely not typical, I thought red eyes were more unusual in general, whatever the breed? We had a couple of Abyssinians, both with black eyes.

It just depends. I've had an aby with pink eyes before but I've also had abys with dark eyes. I've also had American short-hairs with ruby eyes but also Americans with dark eyes.

Red eyes are just eyes that lack pigment. Any breed can have them. I personally find red or pink eyes to be beautiful. If you look closely at them, they look exactly like any other eyes with an iris and pupil, only the color is different. Next time you see a red eyed one, really examine them. You might be surprised how beautiful they are. You'll notice that guinea pigs can also have tiny or large eyes. Myself, I like the ones with the small eyes.

Thanks everyone, this is all good information. I have had trouble finding anything other than the typical short hair breeds here in Irving, TX.

My Aby has one very dark brown eye and one eye that is a lighter brown -- you can see some ruby in it. What I think is interesting is that her dark brown eye is on the side of her face that has an agouti patch. The lighter eye is on the side of her face that has orange hair. And the skin around the light eye is pink, but is darker around the dark eye.

Wow, that is different, I guess I still have a WHOLE lot to learn. Much more than I realized.

It all depends, as the others said :)
My guinea pig Broccoli has black eyes with light blue around, which are pretty! I like red eyes too though. Carrot (RIP) the one in my avatar had reddish eyes which were lovely.

I didn't know, I really don't get to see very many of them. They are not plentiful in Texas, don't know about other areas.

It may take a day trip to find your perfect piggie, but after that for the next 4-7 years it will totally be worth it!

No. The eye color only depends on the fur color and the fur colors are the same for every breed.

I don't mind a day trip but still don't know where to go to find any.

@Wildcavy That's cool! Has she let you take any close ups? :p

GGLuv The best teacher is always listening and learning from their students. For being such small critters, the world of cavy is remarkably huge!

It astounds me when I think about all I know versus all I have yet to learn. Yes, I know I'm a newbie, but I wouldn't be surprised if I continued to learn something new about them every day until I can no longer physically care for cavies. (Which I hope will never come until my end!)

Just a thought! :)

@GGLuv Hope you find your perfect piggy! :) I'm in Michigan, not Texas, but maybe someone in that area can help you find piggies. Good luck and God bless!

No. The eye color only depends on the fur color and the fur colors are the same for every breed.

I have a black and white texel guinea pig with one red eye and one brown eye. I used to have a cream colored teddy with one brown eye and one grey eye. I've had a Himalayan, an orange teddy and a lilac abby/teddy mix with red eyes. Eye color is not specific to a breed or color fur. Guinea pigs can have dark eyes, red or pink or blue toned eyes.
