Unhappy I may have to rehome my girls........

I am so upset. We bought a house in May and we have had issues with the bathrooms. We recently got someone out to check the pipes and found out there is a pre-existing issue with the pipes that the previous owner's decided not to have fixed. For them to even dig up the yard its going to be around $3000 and if they find more issues we have to have the money upfront for them to finish the job.

I just found out I am pregnant with our second child and there is no way we can afford two children under 3yrs, getting all the pipes and the bathrooms fixed, plus three pigs and God forbid any sudden vet bills. All of our money is going towards this stupid house and that leaves NO wiggle room. My husband already works about 80hrs a week, and if I went back to work I would literally be paying for the daycare.

Hubby and I are eating ramen noodles for lunch and dinner just so our daughter can keep having healthy food, the pigs keep getting their veggies and we can still save money. I am so stressed out and have been crying all day because I hate the idea of our piggies leaving and dread how devastated our daughter would be to see them go. She already had to give up her kitty because she was severely allergic, I don't want to take our piggies away too.

Before all this happened we had a vet fund I had been saving, $50-100 a month, but all that is going to be gone as well. I feel so bad because I waited so long to get the girls and now I may have to give them up. If I have to rehome them I am done with pets. I cannot deal with this hurt.

(And no, I won't just let anyone have them, if ANYONE gets them it will be someone from this site that others know. My girls will NOT be snake food or bred!)

I am so sorry! I have been in this situation and I know it's difficult. Could you find a friend or relative (or someone from this site that lives close) that would be willing to care for them until you're back on your feet? I would if I lived close but I'm in Illinois
    Good luck with everything.

I'm so sad to hear you in such distress. I followed your threads about getting your first 2 piggies, losing one, and the trouble you had with finding rescues (I offered to drive you piggies from Florida). My heart hurts for you.

Life is always full of trials and tribulations. Try to stay positive. I truly believe that everything works out in the end.

You made a commitment to these babies to provide what was best for them. In the end, I think you will know what that is deep in your heart.

    Good luck with everything.

Sadly no. We have no family or friends nearby other than our neighbor across the street, but they have NO room for our girls or I know they would help. They have two very large dogs, a small dog and a toddler, plus they both work all day long and my girls are super needy and used to me being right there. Plus, I would have to pay for them still so all that would do is move them out of the house. Sadly I think they will have to be rehomed. We only have one rescue in my state, she is over 3hrs away from me and strapped for cash at the moment as well. I don't want them to go to a HS, and I don't want to give them to anyone on CL because I fear they will breed them or make them snake food.

I am so sorry you are dealing with all this added stress. I wish I was closer to you so I could help, but I'm in Manitoba, Canada.
There is no shame in rehoming your girls. Your daughter might have a hard time now, because she is so young, but when she gets older she will understand. You are trying to do what's best for your piggies.
I have faith that you can find a great home for them. It would be wonderful if you could rehome them with someone near you so your daughter and you could visit them and check in on them often. Good luck, and please keep us updated. Try not to stress too much, everything will work out.
    Congrats on the pregnancy also

Oh no, don't lose hope! You could place ads in rescues and in vet clinics looking for a foster home for your pigs, tell them your situation and may be you could get your piggies back when you're financially stable again.

I am so sorry you have so much on your plate right now.
I am not in a position to take them. 6 (including my 3) piggies would be more than I could handle. But depending on where you are in Alabama, I may be able to help you get them to that gp rescue.
I have family in Bama and will be that way next month for my birthday.
Know that is not the most ideal situation

Re: I may have to rehome my girls........

I would suggest just hold on to your babies for a while maybe another month or two to see how things work out. It sounds like you and your husband are just overwhelmed (pipes, pregnancy, long work hours) right now and things may not be as bad as they feel.

Is there anyway to take in a day care kid or two to help with bills? Working at night after your husband comes home or can he take a second job until you get past this house hump?

This sounds like a very stressful situation but it doesn't sound like it is permanent. Try to reduce the cost of your guinea pigs as well. Ask your grocer for some of the unsellable veggies, buy a bale of hay from a local feed store (12-20 dollars for 70 lbs), grow some veggies, ask neighbors for left over veggies. Get creative! I have a bad cold right now so my creative brain is a bit foggy I know I have more ideas somewhere in there.

Where exactly do you live? I live in Slidell, Louisiana and if you wanted I could come get them, keep them for you and as suggested return them to you once you were back on your feet financially. I could always send you updates daily. Pictures, videos, etc.

Re: I may have to rehome my girls........

I appreciate the help, but sadly I have been having to think about this for weeks now. Its not some sudden choice, its something I have lost sleep over for a while. Its going to have to be that way. We already cut corners, get the cheapest stuff possible, since this happened and we are down to the bare essentials and still not able to get the money saved fast enough. Sadly, DH and I have TONS of student loans, and because I am high risk for cancer I have to be checked every three months so I have bills that insurance doesn't cover. Just tons of things piled on. Believe me, this is the only way. Teachers don't get paid worth crap, but he is tenured so that's why he doesn't take other offers.

For now I cannot work because of his schedule, I worked two jobs back to back before his schedule got so crazy. We are in a small town and his hours are 6am- 11pm. He leaves an hour early and gets home and hour afterwards because work is so far away. Besides, being high risk I can't work.

I do not watch other people's kids, again high risk, and my daughter is too much of a handful on her own. I used to watch kids when she was little, but she is WAY too active and too smart for her own good. She just turned two and knows how to escape from the house with THREE baby proofing items on the door, not including the two locks. She's been able to do that since before her first birthday. I cannot take my eyes off of her for a moment, and I wouldn't be online right now if she was not sleeping next to me. There is no way I could watch another child. I am terrified about having another if she doesn't calm down a bit.

I sew and quilt, but other than an hour after she goes to bed I have no time to do that anymore or I would make children's clothing and piggy items to sell.

Again, thanks for the ideas, but sadly I have gone over everything and it looks like my girls have to be rehomed.

I hope it all works well for you. I have an autoimmune disorder that puts me at high risk for cancer, too, but that doesn't affect my ability to work. I just have regular screenings to make sure I'm healthy. Being active is actually recommended for those at risk. I've always worked part time jobs around my husband's schedule. You might want to just look for a weekend job. Employers always need people to work Saturdays and Sundays and there's no school on the weekends. Good luck.

There is no where around here hiring for just a couple of hours which is all I would be able to work with his schedule. And my husband has three jobs. He teaches at a school, online and he works a part time job at the mall. My medical bills, his from a recent surgery and our daughter's are up there. I have health issues and our daughter was born with an internal birth defect that required surgery as a newborn. She has to see specialists every few months. Our insurance used to cover everything except a $25 co-pay for the visit, now you have to pay a $30 co-pay and part of the bill and all the labs. Anyways. I appreciate the help. Hope this doesn't sound like I am just brushing your suggestions off. Its all something we have thought of.

I tried getting the veggies cheaper or free and also getting bales of hay, but its been a no go. We have tons of farmers around, but none of them want to work with "small time" people. They want you to buy truckloads for horses and cows.

Oh, that's actually the least of my health issues, cancer is the least of my worries. Sounds harsh to say, but if you knew the half of it you'd understand. But I too worked, typically more than one job 7 days a week. But our daughter is the main reason I don't work. Daycare around here is so expensive that I would only be able to cover the daycare and would bring NO money home. Not practical when you think about how I would have to drive my husband an hour to work, drive an hour to my job, and so on. I would end up losing money on the deal. And thanks. I am actually very active at home. Jog with my daughter, chase my daughter, explore around our yard and am constantly cleaning, rearranging something.

Re: I may have to rehome my girls........

Wanted to point out, since there seems to be confusion, the high risk issue that adds to why I cannot get a job right now has nothing to do with my cancer risk. I had seven miscarriages before my daughter and several issues with pre term labor while pregnant with her. I will always be high risk during pregnancy due to my health conditions, the amount of surgeries I have had on my stomach and uterus and my miscarriage history. Taking care of my daughter and the house is more than what I am supposed to be doing at this point, things that must be done are things that could cost my unborn child it's life. I am not going to add on to that by trying to work when I know how dangerous that is. I would never forgive myself and neither would my husband.

Again thanks for all the help, but this is something that has to happen as we have honestly discussed EVERY option. This was more of a vent than a help me thread. Probably should have posted that at the bottom.

Re: I may have to rehome my girls........

I'm sorry that you have all this coming down. Just wanted to say that you should get a second estimate - and a third - on your plumbing job. We had a plumber quote us $1900 for a job that supposedly required digging out some pipes in the yard. He worked for a company that hired young men who would make estimates via a canned program that had them put in the symptoms and spit out an estimate. The next two estimates were WAY lower - no need for digging -- and in the end was $180 for the fix!! I have had other crazy plumbing estimates too. Since you are at home all day, do some research when your daughter is sleeping and you may find that it will not be $3000. I could get my house re-plumbed for that!! And if they do require digging, you do not have to pay plumber's prices for that--hire a much cheaper laborer. I have done that as well.

Thanks. We are still looking, but so far that seems to be the common price. We have had three people come out so far. The issue is our house was built years ago, back in the early 70's and they used terra cotta pipes instead of PVC. Well the house is surrounded by huge trees and roots have busted one of the pipes and sadly the camera can't go past that point the check the rest of them. For that one area its supposed to be $3000, and after that if the rest of the pipe is messed up we have to pay upfront. Then we have to pay to have all the trees cut down to avoid this mess in the future. Because the trees are so huge its going to cost about $300 per tree. We have five that we know have to come down. Its just money out the wahzoo.

Thanks again. We will keep looking and hope we get the same results you did.

I hope no one thinks I am cross with them, I am not, I just know that we have A LOT going on and its a lot for others to understand. Unless you know everything you won't understand certain things. Its hard for me to even talk about personal things because I always feel people won't understand or judge, but I knew if I mentioned not being able to keep the girls people would think I was exaggerating.

Re: I may have to rehome my girls........

My second pregnancy was high risk, too. I had heavy bleeding and thought I had miscarried. An ultrasound showed I had not. My doctor knew a lot about autoimmune disorders and ran tests to look for antibodies. Turned out, I have an anti-cardiolipin antibody which puts me at risk for all types of health problems but also made me high risk for miscarriage. I was on steroids and baby aspirin my entire pregnancy. I was off work for 10 weeks but went back full time once I was 4 months along. I had a 50% chance of miscarriage but my doctor said that the risk was the same no matter what I did. I worked at a bank doing data entry and had no further problems. I had guinea pig and a cockatiel but just was careful caring for them and my daughter. I had a babysitter who lived in our neighborhood. I switched to part time, second shift when my son was in first grade to save on the babysitter costs. I understand how expensive it can be.
