Maybe a dumb question, but my friend (a fellow pig owner) told me that pigs can't close their eyes and they sleep with them open. Said they don't have eyelids. I keep trying to catch them with eyes shut, but I can't! So, maybe they don't! Tonight I was cuddling one and she looked very relaxed and squinty eyed, but never closed them completely.

Thanks!

Some do when they are really really relaxed, but I haven't seen it personally. They are prey animals and probably like to keep their eyes open.

Well, Sprite sometimes closes one eye or closes them half way.

I have heard that since guinea pigs are prey in the wild, they only keep their eyes closed 10 minutes of their sleeping time to fool the predators into thinking they are awake and aware, which they sort of are.

Most pigs sleep with their eyes open. My Pippin still keeps his eyes WIDE open while sleeping, but Cocoa sleeps sprawled out with his eyes either closed or squinting. When I'm holding both of them they close their eyes.

Yes. They do. I saw before they fall asleep slowly. Slowly close their eyes.

i've seen my boys close their eyes halfway, and one of them does close them all the way sometimes...but i hardly ever see the other one even halfway close his eyes! if they don't close their eyes when they are sleeping....how do we know when they are really asleep and not just chillin?

I have a herd of fifteen girls living together in a big pen, and they all close their eyes. Never all at the same time though - I think they feel more secure when they're with so many others, and there's always someone else with their eyes open.

all of my three guineas close their eyes to sleep, but it is very hard to see them do this because they immediately open them at any sound or movement.

You know, NOW I'm going to be peering at them constantly trying to catch them with their eyes closed.

But come to think of it, I've never seen it.

CoCo is so comfy now that she always sleeps with her eyes closed. Chatty and Charity will occasionally close theirs and moppy still doesn't close her eyes at all. Once they are more comfy being with me, I think they will eventually sleep with their eyes closed too.

My pig Walter always closes his eyes when he's cuddling with me. I've also seen Agnes with her eyes closed, but not my other 3 piggies.

Yes, they can sleep with their eyes closed, usually when they are relaxed and comfortable, however, they cannot keep them closed too long, and since they are prey animals, they can also sleep with their eyes open.
