Question Is my guinea pig sick?!

My guineapig seems to have/get red ears with some tiny vains popping out and all. He seems to get what I call "headaches" (his whole body temp is high). Also when he's placed back into his cage (its where it mostly occures) he begins to shake his head (kinda like if he just got showered and is drying up) and at the same time jumps around and does laps around his cage. I dont know if that normal or if hes having some kind of melt down?! :o( He eats his veggies, pellets, hay and fruits and has alot of water aswell. He runs around for floor time too.

I guess what I'm asking help for is...
Why does he get red ears?
Why could he be getting fevers or headaches (all over body)?
And why does he shake his head and freak out for about 1-2 min(s) in his cage?

p.s. If there is any (more) needed information about my delema, I will gladly try to explain my situation futher as best as I can. Thank You!

Don't laugh! Smell the inside of his ears. Do they smell a little "off"? Infection has an odor that is just not right. He also could have ear mites. The vet that I worked for would laugh at me if I told him that an animal's ears, incision etc smelled funny like infection, but I wasn't often wrong.

I think I remember reading that guinea pigs can get ear infections, and when they get one they will shake their heads. If I remember correctly, it can cause a permanent head tilt if left untreated. If I am wrong though, someone will come and correct me. Good luck.

Re: Is my guinea pig sick?!

Sounds like an ear infection or ear mites to me.
If your guinea pig experiences difficulty walking or holds it's head tilted to one side, see a vet immediately. Prompt treatment is critical for complete recovery. This can indicate a bacterial infection of the inner ear requiring topical and/or oral antibiotics. A vet will also check for parasites and other conditions.
Rabbit ear mites (Psoroptes cuniculi) may affect guinea pigs. The guinea pig may be seen scratching and shaking its head and the wax in the ears may appear dirty and reddish brown (sometimes just described as "dark"). A dried sugary exudate has been described in some cavies, which may be an early case of psoroptes cuniculi.

Re: Is my guinea pig sick?!

Thank you for helping khptown and Lauren&Pigs. Fortunantly he hasnt shown any signs of head tilting and his ears are clean as can be (for a guinea that is :) ). I will take him to the vet very shortly (hopefully this week) to find out what really is wrong with him. I'm just hoping its not too bad. :oS But once again thank you all for the help! :oD

    Sounds like popcorning to me.

I was just going to say popcorning.

As for the fevers couldn't guinea pigs have a higher temp. then us?

Do suddenly your pigs ears get red or is it constant or when you shine a fashlight under it? If so it could just be his ears.

Guinea pigs average body temperature is 99-103 fahrenheit.
To me it sounds like he's popcorning, you didn't know they have a higher body temerature then us, and he may have ear mites.

It just sounds like he's popcorning, which is a good thing. Could you take a picture of his ears and post it so we could see what you're seeing?

I don't believe ear mites will cause fever. An ear infection on the other hand may cause fever.

Re: Is my guinea pig sick?!

I'm not sure how to post up some images, if anybody knows how please let me know. (This is my second time using this I'm still kind of new.) And yes the ears are almost always red. I know that he has a higher temp that we do, but its my first guinea pig and I'm still learning whats "normal" for them and what to be alert on. He also has a few scabs so I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow (hes already got a meeting) just to make sure hes okay and has no mites to bug his ears. =(

Re: Is my guinea pig sick?!

My pigs with pink ears have always tended to have really dark red ears when they're worked up about something. The veins swell, the ears darken, and you can just imagine steam coming out of their ears as they say, "Mommy, would you please STOP clipping my nails?!"

Re: Is my guinea pig sick?!

Well guys he ended up getting checked and came out of the vets office with some medication. Both of the medications have to be applied/ given to twice a day. The doctor didnt really seem to know much on guinea pigs (I think) but I asked questions anyways. She said that them getting red ears was normal because of their body heat. She also said that if he wouldn't get better anytime soon that I should take him in for the second visit (in about 2weeks). Well thank you all! ^_^

Re: Is my guinea pig sick?!

Well she was pretty sure that something was wrong with him, so she gave him some meds for him to take. She said that if it doesn't go away in about 2 weeks to go back and do a full examination. So for now he has some drops for his scabs and so that it helps him stop scratching and the hair loss, and some oral medication in case he did have anything internally.

Re: Is my guinea pig sick?!

From the sound of it, I'm not so sure this vet has any clue about guinea pigs and just gave you some kind of medication to make you feel like he was doing something. It might be a good idea to look around for a more competent guinea pig vet.
