Some of you may have seen my post of the vast amount of excess urine my sow Tallulah had. https://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/diet-nutrition/31767-veg-causing-excess-urine.html. Well went to the vets today and I mentioned Diabeties and the vet was doubtful as it was so rare in pigs but we done a Glucose test and it was diabeties. He is one of the best vets you can get around here for Guinea pigs, as he specialised in them and owns them...and he has never had a case of this, so he has sent for information from Edinbourough...

Looks like we will have to be injecting her from now on :(

Has anyone got Guinea pigs with this, and if so any advice? would be so much appreicated because as you can imagine I'm pretty worried...

I'd post on Guinealynx about it, they seem to know the most and should help you.

I second the motion to post on guinea lynx. There will be knowledgeable people there who can help give you info.

Also, you can do a search on guinea lynx and probably find lots of threads about diabetes and learn from what others have done.

Thank you for your replies I've thanked both your posts..:)
Just posted on guinea lynx and I'm not too happy at the moment because this is a serious topic I would like to get some answers too quite quickly. I've just had my thread closed because I've posted about Tallulah before and I got told I should add it onto that thread...which has nothing to do with diabetes so I dont know if people that know about this will even look at it.
Thankfully I've been able to get alot of info from the links you've posted so that should help

guinealynx has its rules just like this site does. They want you to keep all discussion about one pig in the same thread, even if it's a different illness, because then all the background info about your pig is in one place for people to read. When you post on your old thread, it will bump it up so others will see it and know there is something new on it. I have done this before and gotten responses. Also, remember the people on there who help, do so out of the goodness of their hearts, sharing their experiences and their knowledge, just like people on here. They are all in different time zones and may take a bit to respond. But, I have always gotten help when I've gone there - they are awesome!

Actually the rules are the same here. You should have posted this on the same thread you had before because that way everyone knows the back story of why you decided to take the pig to the vet and have it checked for diabetes. I won't merge these threads together this time but I will include a link to your other thread in your first post on this thread.

I'm not saying they arent good because they clearly are. But here you can edit your first post and therefore change the title - so people realise there is an update/new topic. Surely if you put a new post in an old one and have the old title people just glancing through wont think "oh I know about that" because it will be an entirely different health issue. =S

I had a dog with diabetes. He lived for a long time with it,7 or 8 years he was 13 when he passed. For the type of dog that was old. I have done so many shots I can't even count them all. PM me with questions and I will answer best I can. I am thinking your hardest challenge is food.
We had to give an equal amount of protein, vegtable and starch to keep his blood sugar even.Protein being the most important part because it breaks down slow. Can pigs eat Bean or chickpeas?

hmmmm...
I'm afraid something like diabetes could be happening to my pigger, Charlie. His bottom in never wet, and he has no excessive peeing or anything, but he drinks A LOT of water and he is much more lethargic than my other piggers. Do you think it is diabetes? (?)

The only way you would know for sure is to take your pig to a cavy savvy vet and have him checked out. We aren't vets and we cannot diagnose illnesses. If you suspect any type of illness, it's always good to have a vet look at the pig.

It's not the case at all and that's why it's such a successful site. Often new problems will be related to old problems and it saves having to re-type the old issues every time.

I'm glad you finally got a diagnosis for your piggy and can start going about treating it.

Also wanted to mention that users can only edit posts for 10 minutes after posting on this forum. After that a mod has to change the title or edit the post.

I dont know to be honest, I'm a novice at this myself but excess drinking is one of the signs, and I know they dont have to have all the signs to have it...but it could be many things so I would take your pig to a cavy vet and get them to check him over and if you are concerned it is Diabetes (as they wont usually check for this straight way) as them to do a pee strip for Glucose :] Hope this helps

I would steer clear of parsley as anything but very occasional (due to its calcium content). Peppers and tomatoes I imagine will be fairly high in sugars, will have a look around for some sort of chart with the sugar content of veggies.

The charts here have sugar contents listed. It's the first column listed S.
Nutrition Charts.

I'd stick with green and yellow bell pepper. Red are high in sugars.
Coriander/cilantro is low in sugar and is fine to feed daily.
Celery is also fine but not for everyday.
Lettuces like romaine are low in sugars and are fine daily.
Cherry tomatoes are low in sugars.
Parsley is something that is also low in sugars but should be fed to pigs over 6 months on a limited basis once or twice per week due to the oxalate levels.

What you want to avoid in your pigs diet is a lot of very sugary foods. Keep fruits to a bare minimum or avoid them. There are some fruits like raspberries, strawberries and gooseberries that are very low in sugars. These could be fed once in a while. Gooseberries don't have sugar in them. Apple is very high in sugar and probably wouldn't be great for a diabetic pig.

Are your pigs on Oxbow pellets?

Thanks for the detailed info, I have "thanked you" for it.
My piggies are on Supa Excel Guinea Pig Food, I think I'm slowely getting something right in her diet as she has been dry now, although I'm not sure if this is because she has been swapped over to vet bed...

We are going to the vets tomorrow morning and getting her urine re-testing to be completely positive we are heading in the right direction, and if we are not we are looking towards cystitis...
