Hello. My guinea pig has a scabby sore under his nose and a little in the corners of his mouth. It has not impaired his eating or anything. Anyone know what it could be?

Thanks,
Amanda

First of all, this should be moved to a different section... I don't know why this is in the feedback forum. You should get the sores checked out by a vet. It could be caused by malloclusion, something where the teeth are misaligned. If not, I can't tell you what's wrong. Hope that this helps you! =)

Will a mod or admin please move this to the approriate section?

Get your pig to a cavy-competent vet IMMEDIATELY! This could be a problem with the teeth. It will eventually cause your pig to stop eating!

Check out Guinea Lynx and look under the Teeth section.

I took my guinea pig to the vet today and he said it was a virus. Gave me some antibiotic cream and said it should heal up in a couple of weeks. Thanks for the feedback!

A virus is not affected by antibiotics. If it's a virus then it just has to run it's course. If the sores themseves are infected by a bacterial infection secondary to the virus, then the antibiotics will help the infection in the sores. It will not cure the virus that caused the sores.

What I'm getting at is this, check to be sure with your vet. Many a doctor has prescribed un-necessary anibiotics just to calm down a parent or concerned party. You don't want your pig to get antibiotics if the entire thing is viral, they will do no good!! (And if not necessary are harmful to pigs when they don't tolerate antibiotics well to begin with!)

Hope your piggy feels better soon!!

I don't know exactly what the vet said. Some kind of bacteria I think. But nonetheless about an hour after the vet applied the cream the major part of the sore was gone. So I guess it worked. It's not like he was acting sick or anything. Believe me he still ate like a pig! But thanks for the concern!
