    New Cage My First C & C

ok so I went to Home depot and got the Coroplast I needed to make Gir's cage and some zip ties and I went to my moms house and got her shelves... I was scared because when I got there at first glance they were the wrong kind, the target kind with big spacing but she has two shelves and enough for me to make the sides of the cage with the right spacing grids and I used the big spacing grids for the bottom because they are covered up...

I dont think I made my sides high enough with the coroplast but I will see how it works they are 5 in high I think... and I have my store bought cage as a second level, I just need to make him the ramp and then he can go up there for his food and stuff, but for now untill I get that built I will be leaving his food and water on the bottom and hay.. I am so happy with myself I did it.

5" is fine. I have one cage that has 5" because it was originally a really long cage and I only had enough coroplast for 5" at the ends and I wanted all four sides to be the same height. It looks fine and there isn't anything being tossed out of it by the guinea pigs. My other cages have 7.5" sides.

What are the sizes of the coro from Home Depot? Just curous cause that's where I got mine and I had to get 2 pieces and tape them together. I think they cost me like $8 each.

Unless you have baby pigs the sides are just fine.
My sides range from 4-5" to 6-8" xD

You feel that? Thats a sense of pride. *wink* I loved that feeling when I finished my cage. Espeically when I saw my pigs enjoy and love it. Great job! I love forward to seeing pictures. I love that you found a way to use the target grids and still have them safe for your piggys.

I agree with @MrWhistles . If I were a piggy, that would scare me too. As the HUMAN, that scares me. My ramp is Coro scrap, carpet, and bent grids. It's covered, so I don't have to sorry about curious piggies falling off... Yours looks a little precarious.

You should try using fleece, instead of CareFresh. I don't know if you have some reason that you don't use fleece, but if not, you really should use it!

    Well done, though!

I will work on another plan for it.. Benjamin and I worked for 3 hours getting this ramp put together . . . but i have some more coroplast, but like I said its very sturdy the coroplast in reinforced and everything is firmly secured with multiple zipties.

I used wood and carpet for my ramp , they LOVED it. they had never been on a ramp before and it took them no more than 15 minutes for them to be comfortable running up and down it, i suggest wood with carpet, they never peed on it but they did poo. it was so easy to make, i can post pictures later if anyone wants? i think you can also see it in once of my pictures on my profile

It is a really good effort, but should certainly be rethought for the safety of your piggie. Also you will find if you can get fleece for a cage of your size it will make life for you so much easier and take a heavy load off your wallet cause carefresh is to expensive to use throughout the cage i find especially with how frequent GP's pee and poop. You'll save tons going to fleece.
Also i really hope i am wrong but it looks like you have a solid air freshner in the cage if so please remove it that would not be good if your piggie decided to sample it as they are very curious Good luck every cage is a work in progress. I have had my GP's 2 months now and have changed there set up probably 5x already.

Re: New Cage My First C & C

I dont have an air freshener ? ? ? It seems like even if I followed the directions that everyone has posted on here for the ramp its not good enough.. I don't understand. My husband and I use the carefresh because we like it, he doesn't want to go to fleece, my Gir likes to burrow and dig in the bedding. I guess what you think is an air freshener is two flower pots.. we took two flower pots and attached the landing for the ramp onto it with zip ties and attached it to the side of the cage so it is stable. the other support is a tube covered in duck tape filled with rocks for weighting it down and it is also zip ties in two different places to the first landing.
