My piggies fell asleep on me! :D

Today, I took my girls out into the fenced in back yard and let them eat some grass for a couple of hours in their playpen. Then I decided to go out and enjoy the good weather with them, so I took them out of their pen and laid down in the grass with them, and they cuddled up against me. Cayenne was busy munching grass, but Alfalfa got cozy in the heat and actually took a nap on me. She closed her eyes and everything!

I was so flattered by this, because I know that guinea pigs are very skittish and they don't like to sleep with their eyes closed if they know someone or something is around. But they seemed completely comfortable with me there!

I almost cried I was so touched :')

Awww so sweet! I'm looking forward to the day my piggies might feel comfortable enough around me to even enjoy being held and pet! Congratulations!!

Aww...it's great they're so comfy around you. One of my boys is curled up on my chest with his head under my chin right now..rumbling at the sound of the keyboard.

How long did it take you before your pigs didn't want to scurry off when you give them lap time? I've only had mine for 3 weeks, and we do floor time every night where I let them run around the bathroom. I stay in there with them, sitting on the floor, and do a short session of lap time and petting/snuggling. They just seem to barely put up with me and are always trying to climb down. Sometimes they look like they enjoy the petting, and other times I can't get the same reaction. They will eat from my hand, which is encouraging!

You need to give things like this time. It has taken me up until June from December to have my Pigs tolerate me.

Imagine a colossus like a human picking up and sitting with a Guinea Pig-- How would you feel? It takes time, treats, and love.

I've had my girlies for about 8 months, and they've just finally become comfortable with me. If they are in their cage and I come over they'll still scurry away most of the time, but I've encouraged them with treats (they love their Vitamin C tablets) and massages so now they will come up to me if I put my hand in their pen. I talk to them constantly and I try to hold, pet, and cuddle them as often as I can so they know I'm a friend.

Also, the way you hold them can have a big effect on their comfort level. I started out just setting them on my lap and petting them and talking softly to them, and then you can hold them up against your heart with one hand on their back and one hand behind their bum. I think the beat of your heart makes them feel more comfortable, and they'll feel safer if you're supporting them the right way. Now Cayenne will just lay on my shoulder and purr in my ear while I pet her :3

And of course, they have moody times just like people do. There are still days every now and then when they don't want anything to do with me and they'll try to run from my lap or even try to bite me.
