Anyone know of a rescue in Jacksonville, Florida?

Hi everyone! I apologize if I'm posting this on the wrong section (please let me know if I am and where I can post this correctly). I just got my first piggie, Don Q, about a month and a half ago. I adopted him from a rescue but didn't receive a lot of information (i.e.I don't know how old he is or any history).

I'm about to start law school and really want to get him a friend as soon as possible. I read the information provided on how it's best to pair piggies but, since he's my first, I would rather go to an experienced rescue where they can help me match him. Does anyone know of a good rescue in Jacksonville, Florida or Orlando, Florida? Thanks in advance!

Go to Pet adoption: Want a dog or cat? Adopt a pet on Petfinder, put in "small and furry" for the animal and "guinea pig" for the breed. Contact some of the ones in your general area -- most rescues are just a group of foster homes, and they can be spread over a wide geographic area. A rescue that's listed in one city may have available pigs in another city many miles away.

Here's a list of rescues in Florida: http://www.guinealynx.info/rescue_organizations.html#FL. The St. Petersburg one is closest to you, but it is still a bit of a drive. You could talk to them about arranging a train or meeting halfway.

You could also try a local shelter or Craigslist. Introducing guinea pigs isn't very hard if your guinea pig is pretty mellow and calm.

Have you looked at this page? Guinea Pigs Social Life It explains how to introduce guinea pigs and when to separate them. One of those baby boys might be a good match for your piggie, according to that page:

We try to match up a dominant with a subordinate guinea pig. It helps to have a feel for their personalities. What if you have no idea about the personalities? An older with a younger guinea pig is a good option (larger to smaller one). They usually establish a natural hierarchy with the younger one being subservient to the older one. You just need to be careful that you don't have a very feisty younger guinea pig with a very laid back older guinea pig. In that case, the younger one may challenge the older one's position as 'alpha' guinea pig (or top guinea pig or the boss guinea pig).
