    Question Cavy Snacks!

Hello everybody! Long time no see... Been busy with the piggies! Anyways, I'll get back to the subject of Homemade Cavy Snacks. I was wondering if a recipe like this would be OK for the piggies.
    Here it is:

    -1/4 cup Oxbow pellets
    -1/2 cup Oxbow Hay
    -2 tsp Honey
    -2 tbsp water
-1/4 cup blueberries, strawberries, or another type of berry

Step 1: Grind Pellets and hay in blender.
Step 2: Transfer to bowl and add honey and water, mix well.
Step 3: Add berries and stir.
Step 4: Put on pan lined with wax paper (or a cupcake pan with cupcake liners) and preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit (?).
Step 5: Cook for 10 minutes(?)
Step 6: Let cool and peel from liners/pan. Feed to the pigs.

Well I haven't exactly done this recipe yet, but maybe some cavy experts like yourselves could help?

    Thanks,
    Julia

I wanna try this! But I don't think Nico would go for something sweet other than orchard hay or supersupersupersupersuper fresh grass from our backyard.

I made this once- huge hit for the pigs. I used orchard grass hay and one teaspoon of honey. I made one batch of straw berry, blue barry and bananna

really hard to clean the blender though!

I also made carrot, brocoli, and lettus ones too- the pigs like them mush better than the oxbow treats!

I don't think honey would be good for them. First it's unpasturised and of course it's pure sugar plus you have the sugar from the fruits. And adding the fact that your drying it which would be consintrating the sugar even more.

I would skip the honey all together. Puree the small amount of fruit and then add the pellets and hay.

    Cute idea though.

You're right, @tabikat55 guinea pigs shouldn't have honey. It's way too sweet. You could just add more water to make the treats stick together while they're being baked.

    Re: Cavy Snacks!

i was so used to making treats for my dog, i wanted to do the same for my pigs. but, really, most pigs are just as happy - if not more so - with a piece of carrot, or some fresh herb, or a snip of cucumber. all that fuss and muss isn't really that important to them. at least that's how it works with my family of 7 pigs here!

I agree. It's not worth the mess. Just clip them some fresh grass or give them some mint or something. I have blackberry and grape leaves so my pigs get that as a treat now and then. They're just as happy as they would be with a treat you prepare and bake.

    Re: Cavy Snacks!

But would making them a baked treat be okay for every now and then? I've thought about this too, as I used to buy stuff for my hamster. I won't give my pigs anything from a petstore now though.
I would probably make a veggie one. Just to add to the original idea, if you want to make a carrot one (or some other hard, unmashable veggie) you could grate it as fine as possible, and then mix that into it.
This does seem like a really cute idea though

    Re: Cavy Snacks!

provided the ingredients are all good for the pig to eat, it wouldn't be a bad idea. it's just that it's not necessary. if you want to do something nice for your pigs, i think the better use if your time would be to sew them a cozy cup or sleeping bag, or make them a maze to play in during floor time. this is just my opinion however

I've thought about it before and I think it would be a cute idea. I love to bake human food too, so this would be a nice alternative !

    Re: Cavy Snacks!

I made them. I found I needed more like 1/4-1/2 cup of water. It was hard to get them to stick together, and impossible to make a dough out of it. I ended up squishing them into little balls. I also added 200mg of vitamin c to the batch, which made 30 treats. Just for a little added 6 mg of vitamin C.

Honey is not good for pigs. Paula is right, your time is better spent finding some good natural snacks like a few blueberries, a slice of strawberry now and then, maybe some fresh, un-treated grass.

I didn't include any honey in it. It was just hay, water, pellets and pureed carrot.
