    Star help

Hey everyone, I need help. I have 2 guinea pigs and today one died but I dont know how she did. Apparently it was because she chocked on her food. Is that possible? My other guinea pig that was sharing the cage with her is acting weird.

I also have another guinea but I dont put her with the others, 'coz they don't like her. But now I have to try and introduce her to the other so she doesn't get lonely.

I don't understand why she died, it was very upsetting because she was stiff. I thought she was sleeping because she looked like she was and when I touched her, yeah, she was stiff but her body was still warm.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is possible for guinea pigs to choke on food, what sort of food do you feed her ? It is more likely with the seed food, colourful mix. This is another reason why we recommend on this site to feed your piggies plain pellets,as they have the right nutrients for your piggy in to. How old was she ? Maybe it was just her time to pass to rainbow bridge.
Where did you get your piggies from ? Many guinea pigs, especially ones from petshops come with underlying issues as many of the guinea pigs in petshops unfortunately come from breeding mills. I did once get two piggies from a petshops before I had found this website, the one was fine but the other Emma had illnesses. We took her to the vet and it looked like everything was clearing up. Until one day, I came home to find her curled up with my other piggy and she had passed away in her sleep. ;( it is heartbreaking to lose an animal. Your other guinea pig is probably missing her friend. Spend lots of extra time with her, and feed her lots of yummy veggies.
If you plan on introducing your other piggy to the one that lost her friend do this in a neutral territory where neither of them have been before(Bath tubs work good). Put hay and veggies in to distract them, and have a towel on handy incase any fights break out. If they get along well and no blood is drawn you can put them back in their cage together, but make sure to clean the cage first and remove any scents of your piggies from the cage. A 50/50 water vinegar solution works well.

My Meringue passed away back in the winter and Gizmo (her sister) was so quiet for the longest time. She has since come around and now weaks for food. Meringue was the loud one of the two! Gizmo has since had a few health problems but she is getting old too. It takes a while for them to get back to normal and "come out of their shells" after they have lost their friend.

The night Meringue died they were both in the hidey hut together. When I went to feed them that morning Gizmo came out of the hut and just sat beside the food not touching it and stared at me. It was like she was saying "you need to look". When Meringue didn't come out that's when I knew something was wrong. It's amazing how they can tell you things just by their movements.

I am sorry for your loss.

Had she been losing weight? It's recommended to weigh your guinea pig weekly http://www.guinealynx.info/weigh.html . Guinea pigs can be sick and hide their symptoms until it's too late, so weighing helps to alert you when they are sick.

I'm sorry you lost your pig. My old guinea pig had an issue where she would always be choking and I understand how frightening it is.

The guinea pig that was sharing the cage with her may be acting weird because she is lonely from the loss of the other pig. Just make sure to keep a very close eye on her movements, eating, pooping, and drinking, in case it was something contagious.
