Exclamation Help! Both my pigs are rumble strutting!

Both my guinea pigs rumble strut. How do I make them stop? Also, they mount eachother and their butts are now very tender. What do I do? And if I get one of them out and they can still see each other, they scram. So i can't seperate them.

Are you 100% sure both are the same sex? If so, what size cage do you have? This is usually just normal dominance stuff, nothing you have to worry about, please read this: Guinea Pigs Social Life It explains a lot about guinea pig's social lives.

What do you mean, their butts are very tender? Rumblestrutting and mounting are totally normal dominance behaviors, and you can't stop them. Why would you want to, anyway? Unless they're different genders. Then they need to be separated. Check their private parts to make sure both look the same.

My guinea pigs are the same gender, both males. From the same litter.Five months of age.Their bouts are tender because when they mount each other they scratch.I have tried seperating but it makes them cry forever.I want them to stop beacuase I can't pet their backs with out them crying. They also have scratch marks on their back.

If they're five months old then they could be starting puberty. How big is their cage? (:

If there is blood, I would say it could be best to seperate them for a couple of months till they've calmed down abit then introduce them again.

Re: Help! Both my pigs are rumble strutting!

    well a cube is 14"
Doing my simple math it sounds like a 2.5 by a 2.5?

ETA: 3 feet by 1 foot is 3 square feet. To find the square footage times the length by the wideth.
OP, You don't even have enough square footage for 1 guinea pig. I highly recommend expanding your cage to atleast 2X4 grids(not feet). From what I've read here, male guinea pigs get along better in larger than recommended cages.

I have 3 males, I use to have two, 2x5 is the minimum of what I would put two boars in. But while going through puberty I would give them a 3x4 or 3x5.

Pet store cages can be any size, as long as it's from a pet store though they are typically extremely small. How many grids wide and long is your cage?
