Unhappy unexpected pregnant guinea pig! so scared!

Hey everybody. Sorry I haven't been posting much. I have been dealing with emotional things because of Aphrodite's death. But now I am back! Fresh and new, well...sort of. A couple of weeks ago, I found out the Momi was pregnant! I'm so scared about this and don't know what to do. She has never been around males except for her previous family before I brought her home to my family. So I figured that she must have gotten pregnant before I picked her up. I'm sorry if anyone is upset as I am about this. And let me tell you, I had absolutely, in to way in a billion years ever would intentionally get a guinea pig pregnant. I am so scared right now. My heart is pounding! So I looked up how to care for a pregnant mother and everything and I'm sure I know at least the basics about it. But I don't know everything so If you have any tips, anything at all that will help me please don't hesitate to write it down. And I know some people might be a little mad, but I had no idea she was going to be pregnant. And the lady told me she wasn't pregnant. She told me that she hasn't been housed with any males. But when I got to her house there where males. But not around her. but she must have like taken her out or something and placed her in another cage.

After I found this out I took her straight to the vet, no hesitations and the vet said she was perfectly healthy but he said I should take her for a checkup every two weeks until he says it's close time then I will take her every week. He also gave me a discount on the checkups! He is a very kind vet. And he gave me some tips. So yes, thats pretty much how I figured out. I am just so mad and sad and scared right now!!!! I don't know what to do. Should I take her sister (not related but still like sisters) out of the cage and separate them? Should I give her medicine. I know I have to give her alfalfa hay and pellets. I got that part down but if I could get some small tips from everyone that would be wonderful! Thanks! I'm so scared but I'm going to try to be a mother to my baby and help any way I can! Thank you so much for everyone's time!

p.s sorry if the prefix is wrong I couldn't find pregnant.

Calm down. You've got plenty of time to be used to the idea, and to figure out what you're going to do. Nobody's going to be mad at you for taking in a pregnant pig -- how can it possibly be your fault if you haven't put her with a male?

First, don't separate her -- guinea pig sows make great aunties, and your other pig will be a big help. If mom gets too hormonal before the babies come and is causing difficulties, you may want to divide the cage temporarily, but I'm betting they'll be just fine.

Second, a vet visit every two weeks, and then every week, is only going to enrich your vet's pocketbook, and do nothing for your pig. If something is going wrong, you can take her in, but she'll likely be fine, and won't need any help at all, thank you!

Read www.guinealynx.info/pregnancy.html and www.guinealynx.info/labor.html so you'll know what to do. Babyproof the cage so the little ones can't get out/stuck.

Do you know how old she is and if she's ever had a litter before?

Okay so I should only take her to the vet if there is something wrong with her, okay.

The lady I got her from said she had one litter before, and she is about 8 to 9 months old. Thank you so much for your help. Sorry for freaking out, I was just scared. I'll be sure to read these over. Thank you again. I appreciate it.

I'm sorry to hear that. She should be fine. I wouldn't worry about anything unless she begins to bleed. Taking her to the vet is only going to stress her a lot. I don't think it's a good idea for you to take her anymore than once. It's way to stressful for them. You can keep the other female with her because they make good aunts for the baby piggies. She may also help the mom clean the babies after delivery..

You don't have to be scared. Do you know how old she is and if she has ever had babies before?

Since she's pregnant, you will need to give her extra calcium in her diet. You can do this by giving her alfalfa pellets, alfalfa hay and or parsley. The babies will need to extra calcium as well until the reach about 6 months of age. You much sex the babies at 2 weeks(or before if you can) and separate any boys from the females or the mom, aunt and sisters at 3 weeks because they can become pregnant by the time the boys reach 3 to 4 weeks of age.
Here's the link to help you sex the pups. http://www.guinealynx.info/sexing_pups.html

Boys need a bigger cage cause they tend to go through dominance and puberty and need the extra space so they don't drive each other crazy.

All the females can stay together. Mom and daughter relationships are the best ones.

The mom will either go into labor while you're gone or asleep at night. If you happen to be there and she has the babies close together and can't clean off the baby that was born close to the first one then you will have to intervene and remove the sack from the baby's face so it can breath. Her's a link about labor. GyineaLynx has a lot of useful information that will help you along the way. http://www.guinealynx.info/labor.html

She doesn't need medicine unless she is sick.
Oh and make sure you babyproof your cage. And weigh her once or twice a week and write it down to keep track of her weight gain.

Good luck with mom and the babies. Post pictures of them and keep us updated on mom. I hope this all helps you out

Thanks for your help. She has had one litter before I adopted her. Thanks again! This really helped out a lot! I'm sure she will be fine. I wont take her to the vet unless needed, thank you. I only took her this once.
