Where are all the females?

Today I went to Petsmart to get some catnip for my cat. I always look at the guinea pigs even though it makes me want to take them all home. They had a total of 11 piggies in 3 cages (they were at least decent size cages so they weren't really cramped) but every single one was male. I wondered why with that many pigs, none were female. Then I started wondering if they aren't from some breeding mill where they keep the females in order to produce more babies. It made me sad

Usually each Petco and Petsmart keep either females or males not both. Not all pet stores are like this but this I only know because I asked once. While one Petsmart will have males, another will only carry females.

It's also possible that some are mis-sexed and are indeed female. Some stores do claim to house only one sex or the other so they can appear that they are being responsible. And if someone does end up with a pregnant female, the store can say, "Hey, it wasn't our fault, we sell only males".

Many chain pet stores carry only one gender. For example, one petsmart may keep males and the other females. I know for a fact that petco does this because an employee explained it to me. Fortunately, there are many of both genders at rescues

My petco where I got Gidget from has males and females separated of course.

The two stores I've been to around here (one Petco, one Petsmart) have only female pigs.

we got skittles from pet smart and I was told that one store get's all the males and an other store will get all the females.. I like this idea. but that makes you dr for what sex you relly want.
