Losing taste for meat?
Is it normal to lose taste for meat as one gets older?
As background, I know I've used this site mainly for pig questions in the past, but I've recently started to feel this way.
I never considered myself vegetarian or anything, but I do eat less meat than the typical american diet. Part of this is I cook all my own meals except lunch.
And meals I cook myself, I never use meat. To be honest, I just lack the patience to prepare the meat (proper temperature, keeping implements seperate, etc) safely, and it's gotten too expensive. The ready-to-eat products like the burgers or chicken/steak sandwiches that you can toss in the microwave for a few minutes, lately they've been getting more expensive so I've avoided them in favor of just cooking my own food.
But my reason for posting here -- when I go to restaurants and go out from lunch, I often order the typical dishes and lately they just haven't been tasting that good. Meat tastes kinda sick, bitter, not bitter like beer or coffee but some other kind I can't quite describe. But not a good taste or one I like. I know taste has changed as I have got older, for instance as a kid I loved candy and other sweet things, now, not so much and will actively avoid anything that is 'too sweet'. So often times, by the end of eating the meal, I don't really like the food anymore.
There's still some meals with meat that taste good, and places I like to eat, but I rarely go to those places due to expense. The garden variety places I eat lunch at, burritos, burgers, sandwiches, not so good anymore.

Re: Losing taste for meat?
I had a terrible case of gastritis years ago, and ever since, my taste for meat has really died down. My mother says the same thing-the older she gets, she can't even cook meat without getting sick. Most of my meals are grain based, not meat based.

As we get older, our taste buds diminish. Maybe your taste buds that detect bitter are working better than the other ones.

yeah I don't prefer to eat meat unless it is organic. I miss my dad's farm raised meat. It is soooo different. I do use chix tenderloins a lot in stir fry tho and I make meatballs and tacos with ground beef...but it's hard for me to eat a varity of meats, I was never raised to eat meat everyday. we have it about 3 times a week.

I might swap some Morningstar veggie burgers for my regular dose of meat. I heard they are really good.
