How to bond with a skittish piggy
I was reading the "Super Skittish Pig" post which left me with some questions. I too have a guinea pig that is super skittish and dislikes being picked up and squeeks bloody murder but she does walk up to the cage when she hears the crack of a lettuce and eats out of my hand through the cage with no problem. So she won't let me pick her up and would run into her hidey house and won't come out. I read that it's not good to use food to lure them into an uncomfortable situation because it would break their trust (what's your guy's opinion on that) and that it's not good to remove their house when they're in it (which I have to do anyways in order to clean her house). When it's time for floor time I open up a section of the cage in order for them to decide to leave their main cage, but when I do this she never tries to step foot out of the cage like my other piggy. I've had her for about two weeks, she recently had an accident that caused her to no longer be able to use her back legs.
Could she be like that because she feels she's more vulnerable? Should I not pick her up and just wait? Or should I pick her up and hold her for a few minutes then put her down?
