Awesome article, thanks so much for sharing.
That's one of the most ridiculous reasons I've ever heard for buying an animal from a breeder. To call a living, breathing creature "someone else's problems," it's just so wrong.. Unfortunately it is a pretty common mindset."I don't want other people's problems. I just wanted to start fresh," Ellis said.

I agree. It is a common mindset all too often. It's so sad..and sick all at the same time. Since when were animals "someone else's problem" when they don't even get to choose where they get taken to and who raises them? It's so messed up.

She wasn't even buying it from a breeder - she was buying it from a pet shop! Talk about "someone else's problems"!
I was just at an agility trial today where I ran into a guy I was talking to at a previous show about a FIVE MONTH old puppy we had in our rescue. Fantastic dog. Pedigreed. Good with other dogs. Good with people. Drive out the wazoo. We ended up with him because he had been sold by his idiot breeder to people with a German shepherd, a seven month old human baby, full time jobs, and no fence. The fellow wanted to let me know he had applied for him but changed his mind on following up because people had told him they thought it was "a bad idea" to get a rescue when he already had two dogs in the home. I'm so mad I could spit that people who think they're "dog people" will turn someone off from a dog they haven't even MET because they assume there must be something wrong with it or it wouldn't be in rescue.

I find that, more often then thinking there is someting wrong with the animal, people just find it too inconveniant to adopt. I figure if I send someone an adoption Q&A form and that is too much for them, they don't deserve to adopt one of the little lives in the rescue. They certainly can't be trusted to take care of them properly if they can't spend 10 min. filling out a form.
I think it is wonderful that laws are starting to emerge like this. Hopefully more will follow!

That is so wonderful they're banning it! I hope it spreads.
Finally, someone is doing something about it.
There is a PetLand about ten minutes from my house. It's awful. The dogs are skinny, they are in something similar to aquarium tanks, have hardly room to turn around. My mom and I reported it to the SPCA, but, unfortunately, they follow their 'guidelines', per say; shelter, food and water.
To make it worse they come from puppy mills. Now, while I don't support PetSmart in any way, I DO have to say at least at my PetSmart, they have rescue kittens and the Greyhound retirement every Saturday. Not good enough for the small animals (because people tend to have this mindset that only the 'big' animals count), but maybe it's a step in the right direction...

I am so glad that the government is finally recognizing such an issue in our communities! This surely is a revolution in the pet world.
I hope other cities (or the country, for that matter!) follow suit.
