It is really sweet isn't it? Enjoy it!
When my boys first started popcorning, I was concerned because it seemed like an uncontrollable spasm that they did not altogether like. It was probably the first time they ever popcorned because they had been in a tiny cage and on cedar chips, poor babies, before I got them. But now they kind of go with the flow, and don't seem confused when it happens like they did at first. Mine popcorn when they have eaten their fill, when they hear hay rustling when I am pulling it out of the box, and also when they have some nice freshly washed soft fleece to lie on. They look excited when they do it so I think it is like the uncontrollable jumping that small children do when they are happy and excited.
I know, it's too cute!
We have just brought home our 6 week old piggies - Star and Coco and I'm still learning a lot about their behaviour and the noises they make - what is popcorning? and what do the different noises mean?
I don't know if they are happy or not? Can anyone explain the noises for me.
Isnt it awsome! The first time I seen Rowshe popcorn i was really worried!Research calmed my nerves. Glad your pig friends are happy! Keep up the good work!
Im a new piggie mum. I live in Perth Western Australia and piggies are still the same over here - we just have to manage them differently through the VERY HOT weather.
Anyway, my piggies are only 8 weeks old and I'm still getting used to them.
I have no idea what anything means, they have different chatter noises they make and I don't know if they're happy or grumpy.
And I don't know what popcorning is.
Can anyone explain?
Popcorning is a when a pig jumps in the air wildly and runs about. Basicly a pig having fun.
lots of web pages on the "interwebs" with lots of helpful info. Research as much as you can, http://www.guinealynx.info/healthycavy.html this is a good one for example.
It is so cute! When I first saw it, I thought he was having a seizure and I called the vet. LOL
I can try! Here goes:
There is a very loud, piercing "wheek, wheek, wheek" that is an "I want food" noise. This escalates in loudness until the food /person they hear appears. Sometimes mine will get so out of control with this that they scare themselves with their own loudness! They usually do this standing up at the bars of their cage first thing in the morning, or when they hear me open the fridge.
There is also a loud, piercing "fear" noise that is similar, but they will do this when you try to pick them up or when one is dominating the other. It's more agitated than the food "wheek".
There is a lovely "grunting" noise that I call their "exploring" noise. Mine do it when I put something new in their cage, or when I put them somewhere they haven't been before. It's sort of a single note, pleasantly surprised chirp, repeated, as if the guinea is walking around going "hmm, what's this?" to himself.
There is a "teeth chatter" that is more of a physical sound, not a vocal sound made in the throat. It's quite quiet (think tiny little teeth gnashing!). This is a "keep away" noise, and only one of mine does it. He does it when he thinks you might be going to pick him up and he doesn't want to be touched.
There are also a couple of "purring" noises. One is the "rumblestrutting" noise, which the dominant one makes right before he begins trying to mount the submissive one! He does it while he's all fluffed up and doing a kind of mating dance (he weaves from side to side, like a male pigeon trying to impress a female, if you've ever seen that). I think of it as a "horny" sound!
The other one is a short "purr" which I have heard mine do occasionally when petted. They will do it with each stroke, as a direct reaction to the touch. I *think* it's a good sound, but am not 100% sure!
I hope this helps!

I just read through the posts, and had to add, when my little guy first started to popcorn I was terrified! He does it all the time now, and we've created a bit of a game for floor time, I touch his back and he popcorns like crazy for a while. The other day he also managed to do the worm well enough to beat any dancer out there! Literally, he was wiggling on his tummy then he'd lift up his front of back and wiggle all while happily chatting away to himself! Too cute!
See I got mine home knowing what popcorning was and was really starting to hink my piggies didn't like me. They one day I was getting their veggies and they started wheeking really loud. At first I thought I had scared them and started talking to them and looking in the cage to make sure they were alright. They stopped and I dropped the romaine in the cage and they came out popcorning and wheeking loud again! I knew then that my piggies now understood that I bring veggies! They LOVE veggie time and popcorn untill they eat the last scrap. It is so cute!
