Pig Wrestling Contest

Friday at work, I was in the breakroom and saw a flyer on one of the tables. It was an ad for a pig wrestling contest, sponsored by the local 4H club. My husband and I are semi-new to this rural community, so at first I wasn't sure "Pig Wrestling" really meant what I thought it meant: wrestling a live pig. I called a friend of mine from the Humane Society, and she confirmed it -- they really do wrestle live pigs. Young ones. I was furious. She said that the HS had tried very hard to stop it, but was unsuccessful.

I quickly printed up large stickers that read, "ANIMAL CRUELTY -- Please do not support this event," and pasted the stickers all across the flyer. Rather than simply tear up the piece of paper, I felt it was more important to alert people to the fact that this type of "entertainment" (it is apparently very popular with local kids) is NOT acceptable and is in fact cruel and inhumane.

This morning I had to stop by work for a little while, and was upset to find that whoever had placed the original Pig Wrestling flyers in the breakrooms on Friday, had replaced them with new ones over the weekend! I printed more stickers to slap on them, but have a feeling this is going to be an uphill battle.

Any suggestions on what to do when the next round of flyers appear? People at work know that I'm involved in animal welfare issues, so I'm sure they know I'm the one making the stickers. I don't care. It really disgusts me to think that somebody in the building is so intent on promoting this awful thing.

I noticed that the flyer had been replaced again this morning. I'm fuming. Always nice to know you're working with people who are totally insensitive to the plight of animals.

Any opinions on this issue?

I'm thinking of coming up with my own flyer...baby wrestling.

That's sick. It's really too bad the HS can't do anything about it. Ugh.

It used to be called Greased Pig contest I think. Is it the same?

Maybe you could make your own flyer, with facts and information, or put a big poster on the wall of the break room. Or hand out your flyers in front of the event. It will help to explain exactly why you think this is cruel to animals, so it is harder for people to just brush off. Good luck!

Oh gosh.. that is HORRID! I just looked it up on Google.. how can people be so heartless, especially kids, how could kiddies do this? These people make me feel !! Grrr!

The HS is meeting with 4H officials again tonight to try to stop this horrible thing. I'm livid that someone here at work keeps putting up ads for it. Good idea about giving reasons why it's cruel...I need to check on the web and see what I can find to back me up.
