C&C cages for rats?

I've got a pair of young (about four months) female rats, and I was wondering if any of you know whether a C&C cage would be safe for them. I'm worried the grids will be too large and that they'll be able to squeeze through.

Any of you have experience building these for rats?

Thanks!

.

You could always add extra wires to make the holes smaller.

I'm halfway through building a 2x2x3 c and c cage for my rat. I haven't bought the hardware cloth yet.

Re: C&C cages for rats?

if you can buy the small size grids i say go for it, the regular 1x1 size grads are much too big, rats walk through them. i wish i could buy small grids here i would have too much fun making cages

agpiggy- Please don't use chatspeak. If you want people to help you, they have to be able to read it. If you look in the photo gallery there is a section on cages for other pets.

Re: C&C cages for rats?

Watch out for smaller grids. Rats are rodents with collapsible backbones, they can fit under a door jam and through very very very tiny places. They climb like champions and jump like olympians. I swear they are small version of houdini so I would use Mesh grids if you are gonna make one of these and maybe find some mesh for the top maybe with a wooden overlap just to be safe.

Make sure the rat does not chew out of the mesh grid. My hamster chewed through her plastic cage.
