Regular cubes and rats Hello I see some people use the mesh instead of the cubes that are used for the regular C&C guinea pig cages. Is this so the rats can't fit their mouth in between the squares and chew their way out? I'd like to make a C&C rat cage but I'm not sure if they would be able to chew right threw it. The cloroplast would go on the outside of the cubes. Thanks.

Re: Regular cubes and rats I do believe it is so that they can't get their heads stuck between the gaps, or that the smaller ones can't slip through. The gaps are quite big in the regular cubes.

Re: Regular cubes and rats Oh, I never thought about that. My perception of things that are in photos is not that good. Are the squares really that big? Do you think they could chew through it?

Re: Regular cubes and rats Can rats chew through the bars of a regular pet store cage? If not they shouldn't be able to chew through the grids. They will chew on the coroplast though. I set it on the ouside of the cage. If you use a C&C cage for rats I'd use the mesh type grid, put the coroplast on the outside of the grids and of course make a lid.

Re: Regular cubes and rats Hehe No, they can't chew through regular wire cages. The squares do look a little big but with the mesh, I think its a little too 'busy' if you know what I mean. You can barely see in. Do you think a large buck would get his head stuck in the regular cubes?

Re: Regular cubes and rats Regular cubes have holes measuring 1" square. I would worry about risk of getting stuck or getting through the holes. Mesh cubes would be better for rats.

Re: Regular cubes and rats If you have female rats you definitly need mesh cubes. They can escape through the holes. If you have big fat males rats like I do the regular cubes are fine. They chew on the cage sometimes but they have not chewed through it.

Re: Regular cubes and rats ^They'd be baby rats first so it wouldn't be safe for them. I was on a rat forum earlier and someone mentioned they don't make the smaller squared cubes anymore. I don't think Canada has a Linen 'n Things (but we do have a JYSK, if thats equivalent).

Re: Regular cubes and rats I wish they still had those smaller cubes at Target. I have been checking out tons of garage sales in hopes to come across some.

Go to the Canadian website and click the store locator link and see if there is one in your province/area. |

Re: Regular cubes and rats All rats can get their heads through the grids, it just depends if they can get their shoulders through, I choose not to risk it. I use a hardwire mesh (very large roll) I got at Ace for $30. I think that it allows more visibility to the cage than the mesh grids, and you are able to hang things. Also, I am not sure rats can climb up the mesh grids.
