rabbit with head tilt

One of our 5 buns has head tilt. We brought Oscar to the vet immediately when we discovered he was a little lethargic and inactive. We noticed his head at a slight angle..I suspected inner ear infection. Vet did xrays and exam. He has a slight ear infection how ever not severe enough to cause his head tilt. Vet thinks he's had a stroke..he's only just over a year old. He's had chronic pasteurella since the day we brought him home.
Today it's worse than when he went to the vet on Sunday. He's been on antibiotics.
Does anyone have any knowledge or experience on head tilt?? I'm not as savy with rabbits as I am with pigs. I love this little guy and I miss him being with the others.

Re: rabbit with head tilt

It likely has to do with the pasturella. What meds is he on?

Re: rabbit with head tilt

He's on chloramphenical 250 mg every 8hrs. He's in quarantine in a kennel in my daughter's room. Just breaks my heart.

We took him in from a flea market last year. My husband spotted him and went over to see. He was lying in a pitiful mess. We bought him. We brought him to the vet the next day and this is what he had, severe inner ear infection, pneumonia, lice and dehydration. I was so angry he was sick and left that way, my husband had to hold me back from going back to the flea market and making a seen.
The vet then said he had pasteurella and probably always will.

Re: rabbit with head tilt

You should look into a condition known as Wry Neck. It causes the head to tilt and will continue to twist the neck until it eventually.. umm.. pops. You should definitely ask your vet about this possibility. *is more savvy with rabbits than with pigs*

Re: rabbit with head tilt

Hi! I came here to read about Guinea Pigs, but found your post about your bunny and wanted to respond.

I agree that it sounds like Wry Neck. I have a good article about it, let me see if I can post it since I can't post the link as I am a newbie!

well it's not letting me post it with out adding all the codes and it just makes a mess. I probably could type it all out but I'd be here a long long time.

So if you are interested, PM me and I'll get it to you promptly!

Erica
