Re: Making top level more sturdy

I used fleece when I had piggies before and my parents complained constantly about the smell, even though I was washing it every 2-3 days.

Big thanks to Dichotomy for the idea!

Re: Making top level more sturdy

Fleece should not smell if used properly. Did you wash and dry it at least 3-4 times before using it? Did you have one layer of fleece and enough underlayers? Did you have at least a 2x4 cage? If you have boars it helps to leave a small piece of dirty fleece in the cage so they don't remark everything. Obviously litter works just fine if that's what you prefer, but you might want to reconsider fleece since money is so tight right now.

Re: Making top level more sturdy

Oh my goodness! Cute bun!!! Mine looks just like that but grey and a tad shorter hair. I thought he was netherland, they are the ones with the shorter noses. So I'm pretty sure that yours is half netherland (the longer hair doesnt look netherland) but, then again, I don't know what polishes (polishes??? hehe) look like.

ADD: Well, I realize yours is short haired (obviously) so don't think I'm crazy, haha. I just see the hair around the ears that stick up, which my bun doesn't have. And again, I'm no expert on bunny breeds, so I could be a mile off on all of this . I'm glad you could get a bigger cage for her!

Re: Making top level more sturdy

What's the purpose of washing and drying it 3-4 times before using? No, didn't do that. As I remember, I had the fleece, then a sheet folded in half, and then newspaper under that. I had a 2 x 5 (I think) for 3 females. My big thing is that I'm not allowed to wash animal stuff in their washer, so I have to do it at night when they don't know I am, and just make sure I clean it out and do a load of my stuff afterwards. I personally think it's easier to just shopvac the cage twice a week, but I may consider fleece after work slows down, if I can't afford the bedding.

Re: Making top level more sturdy

The pre-washing makes the fleece wick the pee to the absorbent layer.
That's why you have a smell, a) you didn't prepare it and b) you don't have an absorbent layer. Do not use newspaper. It doesn't absorb anything. Use towels or mattress pads. Actually, just read this:

Re: Making top level more sturdy

Hm...Thanks for the link.. I think I'll try it again. Is one yard big enough to cover a 2 x 4 grid cage, if the fleece is 58" wide?
