Neice wants a rabbit
My neice currently wants a rabbit and I want to be able to provide her with the best information possible about rabbits. I can't persuade her into not getting a rabbit..she is really set on it but I want her to be better informed and I thought this website would be a starting point.
I found a website/rescue that lists a lot of great information but I still have some questions:
1) Can she use a C&C cage? I know you can but I don't know if it is the best cage...if it isn't what would be a good cage.
2) What are the specific cage requirements for a rabbit?
3) Anything else you can thing to mention?
I am also trying to persuade her to adopt instead of buying from a pet store which is what she and her grandma were considering.
If you can give me any websites or just general information that would be great.
Thank you.

Re: Neice wants a rabbit
1. Yes, I would use a grids for a cage.
2. I think the minimum requirements for a bunny are something like 30x36. I have my rabbits in a 3x4 with a second level and a 2x4 with 2 additional levels.
3.My rabbits tend to chew on the coroplast, so once they were basically litter trained I placed a shower curtain on the floor and then placed a 5x8 area rug on to to make the bottom.
This is a pretty good site for rabbit owners House Rabbit Information and Care - BinkyBunny.com

Re: Neice wants a rabbit
I'd say it is much easier to buy a dog crate than build a c&c cage. They can be a little too flimsy (even with zip ties) for a determined bunny to get out of! Ebay has some very cheap ones. I'd say you want a 48'' one (the biggest available). Rabbits need the head room as well as length. They should be able to hop 3 times across there cage, lie down fully stretched and be able to stand up on their hind legs. A few other points, rabbits are much easier to litter train when neutered, female bunnies have a 80% risk of developing uterine cancer if not neutered, male buns spray like cats. All round it is better to get your rabbit neutered.
Few other points:
Vets - go to an exotic vets, rabbits are classed as exotic like piggies and need special care.
Pellets - they don't need pellets but you can feed max. of an egg cup per day. It should be seen as a treat. 80% of their diet should be timothy hay, 10% fresh veg, 10% pellets.
Rescues - please encourage the rescuing of rabbits rather than buying from a pet shop.
Have a look at this brilliant forum, it's based in UK but the information is brilliant (care, housing, diet, health).

Remember to vaccinate the rabbit and get it a neutered friend- neutered boy rabbit with a spayed female works well. Good luck.

Re: Neice wants a rabbit
I just thought I would mention that rabbits can live 10 years +. If your niece is looking for a pet that will live that long then a rabbit is okay. Otherwise I would stick with rats/hamsters.
I have 2 rabbits they are both neutered but do not get along. They have their own rooms and come out for 10-12 hours a day. I feed them oxbow pellets. If you want to rabbits, get them at the same time since it can be difficult to introduce a new bunny to an established bunny.
