Not Ranked. Helpful AND tactful post? : 0 Most people will probably not suggest such a large cage as I will, but I prefer to see all animals in decent sized cages.
I worked out what I consider to be the minimum size rabbit cage based on a combination of guinea pig minimum sizes and RSPCA guidelines.
The RSPCA was recommending a minimum cage size of 6x2x2 feet. (Plus a run!) Their updated guidelines are in metric and work out much bigger.
This site recommends the minimum size for 1 or 2 guinea pigs to be a 2x3 c+c, but 2x4 recommended.
Like piggies, rabbits are a social species and need the company of their own kind. Even if you do only get one I wouldn't go smaller than a cage large enough for two (does that make sense)?
Anyway, the average rabbit is at least double the size of a guinea pig and one hop is probably the equivalent of 3 or 4 piggie steps. My two pigs currently live in a 2.5 x 4 (same as 2x5) c+c and quite frankly I wouldn't expect a rabbit to live in there.
I would say go for a 3x6 if you can, although bigger is always better of course.
As for height - if you make a basic one level cage 2 grids is high enough as it allows the rabbit to stand up properly on its hind legs. However, rabbits do like to have shelves, so it would be even better to go say 3 or 4 grids high, with at least one loft area. |
