Fey and Sprite's cage - Guinea Pig Cage Photos They would only be in there at night and while I'm at school. They are mini lops if that helps. |

If they are similar size to guinea pigs I'd apply the same rule regarding the grids, but I think you have done the right thing making a much taller cage. Do they use the top floor? |

Actually, the smaller the rabbit the more space it needs, since they are generally more active than larger ones. They should have a larger cage then what is required for guinea pigs. But if they're only in there at night and when you're at school, then I think it would be fine for a couple bunnies... maybe three. |

Okay thanks pennykit&amanda. By the way that is not my cage it will just look like that. I can't make it and higher because it would be under my guinea pigs cage. |

About how many hours would they be spending out of the cage? Mini lops, despite the name, aren't small. They're around 5-6lbs. The rule for a rabbit's cage is that it needs to be four times the rabbit's length when lying down, the width needs to be at least twice the rabbit's length when lying down, and it should be tall enough that the rabbit can stand up. If they're getting something like 5+ hours out of the cage daily, that cage would be okay for a pair of mini lops, but no more. It's true that smaller rabbits tend to be more energetic, but that doesn't mean that a large rabbit's cage should be smaller. Lops also tend not to be very energetic. Another option, if you think that the cage is too small, would be to attach a small pen to it. Make sure it's at least 2.5' tall. |

Yeah, I take back the "...maybe three" I said earlier. I've never had a mini lop, so I wouldn't know their size. Also, (just to clarify) I didn't mean to sound like I was saying larger rabbits can be kept in smaller cages. |

Personally I think that cage is too small for rabbits. The general rule of thumb here in the UK is a cage about 2x6 feet (12 sq feet) for two small or medium rabbits. Although - the new RSPCA recommendations (given in metric) actually work out much larger. A 2x4 c+c is only 10.8 sq feet, so below the minimum. Don't get me wrong - I don't think its dreadful... but I would go bigger. My last rabbit was in a homemade pen (alone) about 9 sq feet and this was too small. My current two pigs are in a 2x5 c+c (13.6 sq feet) and I still don't feel this is as big as I would like for them - let alone a pair of rabbits. For a pair of rabbits I would go for a 2x6 c+c. Obviously it needs to be at least 2 grids tall so they can stand up fully. Rabbits also love upper levels as they like to have a look out area. |

crazywiggly- That cage is two levels, so it exceeds the UK's 'rules'. |

A 2 by 4 grid cage is kinda small for 1 to 2 rabbits unless you are letting them out for several hours a day at least. |

I always feel bigger is better. I have 5 rabbits. 4 are in the "bunny barn" a large 8 x 14 fancy shed...heating, lighting, sky lights etc. One rabbit..Oscar a dutch lop-eared has a section in the back as he is not neutered yet but needs to be. The other 3, Toby (male) Annabelle and Riley both females are bonded and have the rest of the barn. Outside of the barn is penned so on warm days we crack the door open enough that the can go in an out to play, binky and burrow. Petey... a rex is still in my daughters room in a 2 x 5 c'c pen on level with a grid removed so he can go in and out about in the bedroom. ugh...my daughter always has to was her floor though because Petey isn't fully house broken. but I still prefer he has room to roam..guess I have to take the good with the bad. I don't like my pets being jailed all day. Never implying that others jail their animals. After all, safety is important. Her room is rabbit proofed. Petey isn't neutered either. He was in the barn with the others in his own section but Oscar got through his and attacked Petey who then needed vet care...this happened in October 08 and has been in my daughters room since, but will be neutered also. The goal is to get Oscar and Petey introduced. would like them to all get along so all can be in the barn without any sections. MY daughter is more the rabbit keeper than I am. I wish piggies could be in the barn instead so they can be free to roam more. Maybe someday when the rabbits aren't there. My daughter will be taking them with her when she moves out. But to answer your question, definitely make it longer and taller, wider too. They like to binky. If I were a rabbit..how much space would I like??? |
