Mother Rejected Baby?
On the 19th of April Pip gave birth to four beautiful pups. Even though Shadow was the runt, Junior is now the smallest. All his siblings weigh 200g, but he weighs 150g and it shows. Recently I've noticed that when Junior goes to nurse Pip snaps at him and runs off. He does eat a lot of fresh food and hay but I worry that he isn't getting enough nutrients that his mother would provide. Does anyone know what I should give him to make up for what he is missing out because he cant nurse? Thank you very much.

Re: Mother Rejected Baby?
Weightloss could be many things, such as illnesses. In nature this is also often the reason for the mother to reject the sick babies whom in nature wouldn't have much of a chance of survival, thereby saving milk for the stronger pups.
Is the baby showing any other signs, such as lethargy?
Handfeed Critical Care, or pellet mash if CC is not available. Keep a close eye on further weightloss. Also make sure he's getting enough calcium through veggies or alfalfa pellets/hay. If the weight doesn't stabilize & the baby starts gaining properly you should get a vet visit asap.
Hand Feeding, make sure to read "Handfeeding young pups"

Re: Mother Rejected Baby?
They can do fine without getting milk from the mother. I think it was Paula that rescued a baby whos mother died. Do a search of threads, I think it was a couple years ago.
I hope the baby does well.

Re: Mother Rejected Baby?
He is quite active and is a smart little guy. He was the first to figure out the water bottle and to start eating pellets and fresh food. I don't think its weight loss, He just hasn't gained it.
Last night I took the other three out for a little while so it was just Junior and Pip, she started nursing him then. I guess his siblings have just been pushing him out of the feeding rotation.

I'm glad you maybe figured it out. Sometimes one on one time with mama helps.
My baby is a chub with being the only one.
