We have had Harley for 70 days today...as with so many, she came pregnant. I know gestation can be up to 73 days so I am trying to be patient without worrying too much but I can't help it. On Monday night, 3 days ago, we heard MAJOR belly grumbling from her and she was making quiet little sad noises. I picked her up and her rear end was wet, she had been licking down there though. I really thought she would have her babies that night. Every night since then we have heard her poor little tummy..it is so loud it sounds human. She is still eating, drinking a ton, pooping and seems fine other than she can't seem to lay down long enough to get any rest. So what gives? What are those noises and at what point to I worry about her being pregnant for too long? |

I just checked on Harley. I can feel a baby kick from both sides but her pelvis seems to be solid, I can feel the point of it. I am really concerned things are not going to go well. I have our vet's number close by and know who to call in case of an emergency but am I getting worried too soon or does this seem like a huge deal to anyone else? She is 3 yrs old and I think she had a litter right before (my guess) and those are two great big strikes against her |

IF she has had a litter before, and she's 3 years old, for the sake of HER health, that's good. She'll have an easier delivery. ETA: If your vet is cavy savvy, I would bring her in. IF this is her first pregnancy, she'll need help delivering, and if she's at least 70 days pregnant, she could give birth anytime now. Last edited by NicholsS10; 11-05-09 at 06:37 pm. I think the pelvis bones have been pushed together when they are older than 8 months and the babies can't get out. I would bring her to the vet |

Well, we still haven't had any babies and no signs that anything is happening. We have now had her for 73 days so she has to be at least that far along. Is there anything I should watch for as far as there being a problem? Will I know if there is a problem or could the babies die and we wouldn't even know? There is not an exotic vet on an emergency basis but our vet will be in tomorrow...until then, any thoughts? |

I would bring her to the vet. The older she gets the narrower hew pelvic bones get. |

No. They just stiffen. So even though she is over 8 months she can still have babies. |

My friend's guinea pig went through the same thing. We took her to the vet and got an xray done. The vet said she would give birth at any moment and to take her home to let it happen naturally. Turns out her pelvic bones were too small and she gave birth to 1 still born, which killed her and the rest (5 in total) died as well. There were no warning signs, the vet said everything was going along well and that she would do it herself naturally. Never happened and she passed. She was over 8 months. |

Well I guess I feel really silly after all the agonizing I have done and the threads I have started...I took Harley to the vet on Monday and was told she is not pregnant. I took her to the same vet when we adopted her for a quick check up, she was a little under weight but otherwise healthy. Chubby girl went from 930 to 1084 grams. I think she must have finally become content in life and she now has it made living a perfect piggie life, unlike what she had before. I really thought the little bulges on her sides were babies because of the two other pigs we have had, one was just thinner and one has a really fat bum. So thank you all for your advice and well wishes!! I was really sad since I looked forward to seeing little pups run around but am glad Harley is happy and healthy and we are not contributing to the pig population. Again..thanks everyone this site is so awesome |

Hey good news after all. I'm glad she wasn't pregnant. She's just a pudge butt. |

I can see how that could happen. I posted about my Sable a while back because even though logic told me she shouldn't be pregnant she sure has gained weight. She is pretty pear shaped and bulgy on the sides. Glad your girl is fine. |

I can see how you might wonder with sudden weight gain. One of my girls is a chubby and recently she suddenly seemed much rounder and heavier and had gained almost 2 ounces. I KNOW there's no way she could have been pregnant. We do have a male but he's neutered and didn't come into contact with the girls until more than 3 weeks post neuter. But still, it can make one paranoid. ![]() At any rate, I'm glad that she's not pregnant so there won't be any worries about her health or the health of potential pups. She's just a happy girl. Well done. |
