My guinea pig went into labor a couple hours ago, and she now has 7 babies. They are so incredibly small! One is about the size of a golf ball. She seems to be doing well, I just fed her some celery and carrots and she gobbled it right down. Any advice to help mom with her large family would be appreciated! |

Oh, wow! That's a lot of piggies! Glad to hear everyone is doing well! I'm waiting on both of my girls to give birth (but I don't think we're going to have even half as many pups between the two of them as you've got!). |

Hi there! Congratulations! Seven sure is a lot of babies! We had a foster piggie who had 6 babies and that was a lot! Make sure you are feeding the mom lots of fresh veggies and pellets and hay. She will need lots of food to keep feeding all those babies. Encourage the babies to nibble on solid foods. One thing we did was to mix up some critical care into a very thick consistency so the mom and babies could eat it as they wished. You could also take pellets and wet them down a little and make a little mash from them. I think this helped take a lot of the strain off the mom having the babies able to eat some critical care to help supplement them. The mom ate it too and I believe it helped her keep her strength up. I wouldn't suggest it on a long term basis but for a week or two it might help. Make sure you get a scale - a kitchen scale or a postal scale will be great - and you will probably want one that measures in grams. Then weigh mom and pups daily and keep track so you know if they are gaining weight. The mom might lose some weight due to all the nursing demands. The pups may lose a little at first but they should very quickly be steadily gaining weight. If you find one or more of the babies are not gaining well, you will need to help feed them. http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html#pups Whatever you do, never supplement with any milk products or anything like kitten milk! Good luck with everything! Please post pics - we would love to see the babies! Oh, and make sure you learn to sex the babies accurately because you need to separate any males out when they are 21 days old. http://www.guinealynx.info/sexing_pups.html Here is a link to a chart showing what veggies are good to feed: http://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/...tml#post254730 Since you are feeding a nursing mom and pups, they will need more veggies with lots of calcium than other piggies need.
