Talking My tinkerbell had her pups! Sooo cute!

Yesterday while we were all awake she delivered 2 pups before we even knew she was in labor! She made NO noise! They pups made more noise then she did. Anyhoo there are 5 and they are all looking healthy and walking around. It hasn't even been 24 hours and they are already playing with the water bottle and nibbling on the hay! I have a photo album here! Just follow the link!

Re: My tinkerbell had her pups! Sooo cute!

Yeah I was the one who thought her brown pixie was a girl because I believed the lady I got them from! Now I know never take someone Else's word for it!

Anyway once I saw she was prego I got the boy out the cage! But I was surprised she had 5! She's such the mommy too. She is always feeding and cleaning them all. A few times they would bug here and she would shove them cross the cage but they seem fine with it!

Talking Re: My tinkerbell had her pups! Sooo cute!

At first I wasn't thinking much about keeping any! But by gosh there cute! I found myself thinking up cage ideas and names! My SIL is taking one off our hands but so far I don't want the others to go anywhere!

I have two full male boys who don't get along very well and it would be nice for them to have a friend and the mom to keep a daughter or two! They are so much more happy when they have friends. Even though me and the kids and the hubby all pay plenty attention to them.

There in the living room where everyone always is so they don't feel alone!

Re: My tinkerbell had her pups! Sooo cute!

Congrats! So cute!

This raises a question for me, though. Will a guinea pig live peacefully with one of its offspring? Or is it a species that tries to push away the young once they are old enough, and keeping them together can result in aggression issues? Can you successfully keep a sow and a female baby together?

Re: My tinkerbell had her pups! Sooo cute!

Far as I know females get along usually especially if they are raised together. I would have the boys in one cage (separators if necessary?!) and the females in the other. Iv seen a lot of people online who have had 3 or 4 girls together. I haven't seen any problem with the siblings getting along yet either? And I would have assumed to see some bickering because of the only two teets and 5 pups! Anyone else here have experience in this?

Re: My tinkerbell had her pups! Sooo cute!

My Sassy had 2 girls and a boy last April(08) and Rosy had 2boys and a girl( 5/08) all of whom were successfully rehomed. My friends piggy had 5 but 2 were still born. There were some bickering over when they were gonna feed. But as for keeping family members together. My friend has Sassy's twin girls and they get along great. Sassy is Trixies grandmum and they got along great. Course i lost my sassy to cancer. Thankfully I have her granddaughter. But then you all criticized me for breeding. had i not though i wouldnt have my trixie. It not right that some people get criticized for having baby piglets and some dont. makes me wonder. Although I didnt get my piggies strait from breeder or shelter( which is not very easy here.) I did get them from reputable stores. what gets me is I was told you all dont believe in breeding. But I guess that was just directed towards me. It should not matter how a person gets their piggy. what matters is what kind of care they recieve. Just about everyone jumped to conclusions that I dont take care of my piggies. Well that not be true every piggy ive had that has been ill has been taken to a vet who specializes in piggies. But only one person on this site has taken time to give me a chance .

There's a difference between an accidental pregnancy, which was the case for the OP in this thread, and intentionally breeding your animals for selfish reasons - which is what you did. Because you wanted to have the offspring of a pig you loved, you risked your sow's life and created more lives when there's an already massive overpopulation problem. But of course you probably don't care about that - after all, you've got what you want and who cares what you've risked or harmed to have it. How shamefully selfish.

Outstanding? You paid to buy living creatures just the same as you'd pay to buy a new shirt or box of cookies. This "reputable store" no doubt replaced the pigs you bought with one or two or three more - they likely got them from a horrid breeding mill and will continue to do the same so long as you and people like you don't see the slightest problem with buying a sentient creature just the same as you'd buy a pair of jeans.

We don't believe in intentional breeding, what you specialize in. The pups in this thread were not the result of an intentional act, they were the result of an accidental litter when a person had what she believed to be two females sharing a cage that turned out to be a male and female. Surely you can understand the difference, unless of course you're only interested in stirring up a fight where there's no cause for one.

It matters very much if the place the pig is acquired from is a place that abuses and mistreats those pigs, and if the buying of the animal helps to perpetuate a cruel cycle of abuse and back-to-back breeding.

Well this being an anti-breeding/pro-rescue site, are you surprised people would criticise for breeding? Do you think that it's only you who gets criticised for it? It's not criticism for having baby pigs, it's how the babies came about. If you have them because you didn't know the pig you brought home was already pregnant or was mis-sexed that's one thing, but it's completely another if you have them because you purposely bred your pigs.

Why would you think that being told we don't believe in breeding was only directed toward you? Do you think you're the first to hear that from people?

It DOES matter where someone gets their pig. Buying from stores contributes to an over-population problem. It also opens spots at stores for breeders and mills to put more pigs. Stores see their animals as inventory. They see them as ways to get profit and they don't care WHAT happens to them as long as they can make a buck and make room for more "inventory".

Adopting from shelters saves lives. It adds to the solution of the problem, not the creation of more of a problem.
