Is she Pregnant?

Ok I know breeding isnt endorsed here but I need a second opinion.
I think she may be pregnant due to her weight gain but I may be wrong.
Now she will be 6 months old in August and she weighed 500 when she was 5 months.
So is this her normal weight for this age or do you think she is preggo? She has
chunked up a bit but it may be because shes just growing up.

Here is some info on her.

Skinny Pig Information

Born: February 2009

6/29/2009 - 512grams (I bought her)

7/13/2009 - Started living with Another Pig.

7/15/2009 - 537grams (gained 25grams)

7/17/2009 - 545grams (gained 8grams 2 days)

7/26/2009 - 605grams (gained 60grams in 9 days)

Elaborate on this please. This could mean a lot. Is this when you placed her with a male?

Was this on purpose? Just curious.

Re: Is she Pregnant?

No, not intentional. I bought her by herself because 1, I didn't want to spend $65 per pig, and 2 she was the only one left.
So I got another one a few days later and quarantined for 2 weeks and introduced them.

The new "she" turns out to be a "he".
I cant believe I missed those things Lol Now that I look at him I cant miss his "parts".
Not sure why I missed them before, they are HUGE. haha

"Her" name is now Hank.

Re: Is she Pregnant?

Quarantine should be three weeks for future reference.

If you haven't separated them I suggest you do now.

I'm sorry for the sexing mistake at the hands of the pet store. That seems to be an all too common theme with them. I would say that yes, she is most likely pregnant. Give her some alfalfa pellets or alfalfa hay or high calcium veggies like parlsey and kale just in case. Poor baby

Thank you for this post!

I will get those when we go to the store in the morning.

I'm just sorta happy I messed up before her Pelvic bones would have fused.

Re: Is she Pregnant?

Pelvic bones don't actually fuse--that's a myth. But they do stiffen, and pregnancy complications increase with age.

If you haven't already done so, separate them now in case by chance she is not pregnant.

Make sure you get a competent vet lined up. Pregnancy complications are very common even in pigs that are relatively young.

Continue to weigh her weekly and feed her alfalfa pellets (or another form of extra calcium).

Re: Is she Pregnant?

Right now I feed them Small World Guinea Pig Pellets.
It says "Contains Vitamin C" and on the Ingredients list it says "Dehydrated Alfalfa Meal."

Is this an OK food? And yes I also feed Veggies each day.

Also if I continue giving them Timothy hay and just give them Veggies high in Calcium like Parsley will that be fine?

Re: Is she Pregnant?

Small World food is low quality - the alfalfa meal is not first on the list. I know it doesn't have any neon bits, but that isn't the only sign of quality. Oxbow or KM's is your best bet on good piggy pellets.

I'm sure Ly will add something to this in the very near future as diet/nutrition are her specialty.

If memory serves me, this is a brand sold at places like Wal-Mart. They are low quality with poor ingredients. You'd be better off giving Oxbow Cavy Cuisine or Kleemama's timothy choice pellets.

Are you feeding a good well rounded veggie diet?

Yeah, Walmarts where we get it at. And yes, they get tons of Veggies. I don't have an exact list or schedule as to what they get and how much like some people though.

Cilantro and Carrots are prob their Favorite so Far.
Romain Lettuce and Collard Greens as well.
Oh and Watermelon

Re: Is she Pregnant?

Watermelon has lots of sugar. Make sure not to feed it to them more than once a week.
