Re: floor time all the time?

I don't let mine run around all the time, just when I can keep an eye on them. Usually they get about 2-4 hours of floortime, depending on the day of the week.

That's called "free range". Some people prefer to let their guinea pig that way. The piggies don't seem to mind it at all.

Re: floor time all the time?

My piggies love being free range. They are only allowed free ranged in my bedroom though since I have a cat and to be honest I think it is a bit dangerous having them running about the house constantly.

Re: floor time all the time?

I have a C&C cage with a door that I leave open during the day so they can mosey about the living room. Everything dangerous (or that I don't want them to eat) is tucked away, and they go back to the cage to toilet so it's not at all messy (unless you count the inevitable bits of bedding they occasioanlly bring out with them!).

It works well all round, although two of them aren't at all skittish and will walk up to greet you like a little dog, so if there are people round who aren't used to them pottering about, I keep them in to save them getting accidentally kicked.

Re: floor time all the time?

Mine stayed in their floor time area overnight for the first time last night. They do seem to enjoy it but I'll put them back into the cage some time today so I can clean up the mess they left behind. And since their area blocks half of my living room, I simply can't let it stay there all the time. So they can run around for four times a week all day, and for the remaining three days, the room's all mine again.

Re: floor time all the time?

I wish I had floor space but I dont. Their cage has more room than any floor space I have. They do get lap time though.

Re: floor time all the time?

I'm going to let them free range in my bed room when I'm out sfe guarding all electrical lines although i'll be getting rid of my tv wardrobe cd player so i've got more room to let them play.

Re: floor time all the time?

Since some of you leave the cage door open for your piggies to go in and out..I read that it's not good for the cage to be right on the flloor. Are your cages on the floor or is there a ramp from the opening..?

Re: floor time all the time?

It is ok to put the cage on the floor, although it's better to have it on a table. I do the same as you cavy lady. I only put them in their floor time 'pen' after I come home from school. My parents would have a fit if I let them roam around the house. Besides, they aren't litter trained so they would just make a mess.

Re: floor time all the time?

There's a book I've read that says guinea pigs can not see much further than a metre in front of them.. they get scared because they cannot see all the sides of their cage. So their cage should be 1 metre at the most. So it would be kind of the same as floor time... what are your thoughts on this? I don't think they'd get scared as they are okay in the wild - they don't have a metre long cage in the wild.

Re: floor time all the time?

Mine get supervised playtime when I get home from school and weekends. They get run of the Living room, dining room and kitchen. Sometimes they do make some mess, but it's okay if they mess in the kitchen, as it's tiles, easy to clean up.

Re: floor time all the time?

I have carpets in my bedroom but I want to give my pig free range. Will she pee on the carpet, and how can I prevent that if she will? Also, how do you guys get your pigs to go in and out of their cages? Ramp?

Re: floor time all the time?

Pigs will pee and poo where they like! (of course there are some exceptions). I have my cage on the floor so they go in and out as they please. If your cage is on the table, building a ramp will be pointless because it will most probably be too steep. Is there a room in youe house where there is lino/hard wood flooring/tiles? Sometimes I like giving floor time in my bathroom because there is lino, so the mess is easy to clean

I use a store-bought cage right now, about to get coroplast today to finish my C&C cage. it will be on the floor, but will she really just jump over the little walls?

Re: floor time all the time?

My 6 piggies have a cage in their own carpeted bedroom in which they have 24/7 access to roam the entire room. They only make a mess in the cage area (except for a few kicked droppings) and the carpeted area stays clean. But if I put pigloo on the carpet they will go on it their so I keep the pigloos and hidey houses to the cages I have in the room. They tend to stay in the big cage mainly but tend to come out during the early morning and afternoon when things are real quiet.

Re: floor time all the time?

My Simon gets the whole basement free roam... He really likes it, and is the only one potty trained(I didn't even have to teach him!), and knows NOT to chew on any wires of any sort. Plus, if I put up a barrier, he jumps up onto the carpet that's rolled up and hops over it. -_-; My girls like it, but they go everywhere!
