I am making some stuff for when I set up my dining room for floor time, which is going to happen this weekend for the first time.
I've got a big cardboard box and I'm cutting it into "layers", meaning cutting around all 4 sides to make 4-sided cardboard strips that stand up by themselves because they are still in the 4-sided box shape. The strips will be a bit higher than the piggies, but I'm experimenting with different heights. I noticed that when I got my piggies a few weeks ago and kept them in the bathroom for 2 days (didn't want to keep them in the petstore cage that came with them) they preferred to run next to the walls and bathtub. So they feel safer near a wall. my aim is to have enough floor space to have several of these cardboard square rings, and position them in different ways. My piggies are using their current temporary-base cage as a kind of obstacle course when they run. They jump from their basket piled high with hay to the top of their igloo in the next bin, and then jump down, run around it, head over to the ramps at the other end, run up one shallow ramp and down the other side into the other bin, then back through a clear plastic tunnel to the basket, etc.
Maybe a plain empty floor is too much space for yours. I intend to give mine more plain space to run, but also to put a few obstacles in it like the cardboard square rings, perhaps with hay hidden around the corners, and see if it makes them explore more during their exercise. |
