Jumping during floor time

OK, for Mu, my 6 week old or younger baby piggy, I made her a "playpen" of sorts. I cable tied some grids together and cut up boxes and taped them to the outside so she couldn't slip through (didn't do that the first time and she got out!). Well...she runs around and is really happy, but she got to the point where she would run full speed and try to jump OVER the grids and she's VERY close! It was like a game to her, but I'm worried she will jump out and get to something she shouldn't. Is this normal for her to be trying to jump out? All I had was some food in there for her, would putting more stuff in there for her to explore solve this? Any suggestions what a baby guinea would enjoy? I noticed if I got in with her she was fine, would try to hide behind me and play! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

When my boys were little they really like tubes and tunnels.

Re: Jumping during floor time

Well I don't know about jumping out but when my piggy was a baby he was very "gifted" at finding ways to get out of the barriers I had built. So I would say escape attempts are normal. For younger piggies you often need higher barriers so you may need to raise them or something.

I would definently put some toys in there for her. That's kind of what floor time is about - being able to run and play and do things you can't do in the cage. I would also suggest that you do sit in there and spend time with her. This is a great bonding time for the two of you so get in there and play as much as possible!

My piggy has always loved tunnels too. Sometimes I hide little veggie snacks for him to find. There are tons of toys out there. Every piggy is different and they tend to change their mind a lot in my experience (meaning a favorite toy one week may not be touched another). Try looking at the forum here on toys for more suggestions.

Hope this helps!!

Re: Jumping during floor time

Well my piggy who is now 6 months old, use to have this problem. Before I got a frame for my bed he would run up the side and hide under my pillows! But that was before I layed things out for him. I have a playpen for him, which i rarely use unless my room has a lot of things that he needs to stay out of on the floor and he tries to do what your "Mu" did. I just would lay on the outside of the playpen and when he would come near me I would pet him and then he would "purr" and go popcorning off into a different direction. So, I think you should either put toys in there with her or you should just block off the things she needs to stay out of and maximize the space that way. Oliver [my piggy] really enjoyed (and still does) a Binder set up on the floor...just open it and put it on the floor until it's wide enough for your piggy to hide in and they will LOVE it. good luck.
