Pig-Proofing

I may or may not be lofting my bed and getting hard wood floors. I'm wondering what I should do to make my room safe so my pigs can have floor time in my room. I have courtains that go all the way to the floor, is there some way to block them off or should I just pull them back whenever the pigs are on the floor? Are there any ways to prevent the guinea pigs from nibbling on electrical wires and circuts so they dont get hurt? Are there any other hazards or problems that could happen with letting my piggers hang out in my in my room? I'm just thinking about this for the future, I want to get a second pig and get my room done first.

Re: Pig-Proofing

Have a look at this page for more info on floortime/ pigproofing http://cavycages.com/floortime.htm.

You'll absolutely need to cover or hide any electric cables from their reach - if you can't move them you can get cable casing pretty cheap from DIY stores. You'll need to block off any gaps they could get stuck in or find trouble in too.

The initial pigproofing takes some attention but once you have the main hazards covered and start thinking in the right way to automatically spot potential problems, it's a doddle!

Re: Pig-Proofing

At my last house we had curtains that went down to the floor - they love to play in them, running back and forth behind them, but unfortunately you may find they have a nibble at them, so it might be best to pull them off the floor or use grids to cordon the area off. I think pigs prone to toiletting outside the cage may find all the material a bit too tempting too!
