making an outside pen

I have an area of yard about 20'x60' to do with as I please. Part of it will be a guinea pig garden. Would it be possible to make a safe guinea pig enclosure out of that for them to eat in during the day? We have alot of hawks around here so it definitely needs some type of top. Any ideas for fencing and the top?

Re: making an outside pen

Maybe use grids, chicken wire, closet wire. Look at some pictures to get ideas. Sorry I do not have more. Good, PooH.

Re: making an outside pen

eBay has some great outdoor pens that have roofs. I like the chicken wire and wood idea.

Re: making an outside pen

I have an outdoor pen made out of scaffolding poles and chicken wire. It's not in use at the moment because I need to replace the top - I used to have netting but after five years it got damaged and isn't useable anymore

Re: making an outside pen

Yes I have an outside pen that looks almost like Furkidsmommy's pen just chicken wire and wood. It's actually really easy to make! Unfortunatly "sp" I don't have any pictures (as it is winter) but no predators have gotten in, so I'd say it's pretty safe!
The only thing that I recommend is making a wooden shelter at one end, you don't have to but my piggies like it.
Hope that helps!

Re: making an outside pen

Also for outside if you make a garden and outdoor run for your pigs please make sure to not use any type of pesticides on the grass/garden and make sure it is not in full sun and they have plenty of shade as pigs can get heat stroke.

Re: making an outside pen

Its very nice. One question though? Can a dog move the cage or push it so it can turn over?

Re: making an outside pen

It will be on the north side of a building so shade all afternoon and evening. We don't treat any of the lawn, fields, pastures... because of the chance of pesticide or herbicide run off. There's just no good reason to go spraying chemicals on the ground. I'm thinking of running a strip of electric tape around the outside(definitely not where pigs can touch) since the area is between the pasture with electric and the building. No foxes or dogs are gonna mess with that. Touching the fence that close to the electric charger makes my heart skip a beat.

Re: making an outside pen

Pennick was that question directed at me? If so no there is no way that thing can get pushed over. I can sit on the top also and it doesn't cave in. I only use it when the outdoor temperatures are between 68-75. I place the pen half in and half out of the shade, I supply water and hidey houses. I am out there constantly with them anyway. In addition our entire back garden has been pesticide/chemical free for 3 years; we have more dandelions than any of my neighbors and were proud.
