How can I make sure our grass is OK for piggies?

I would like to let our piggies have some fun in the great outdoors. My question -- we have lived her for 18 months, and we never apply fertilizers or pesticides to our lawn. But our lawn is breathtakingly beautiful, which makes me very suspicious that someone used chemicals in the past, since all of our other lawns have looked atrocious. It's green, it's lush, and it's uniform -- it makes me worry that someone in the past put poison on it.

I saw one of our neighbors apply poison on some bushes in his front yard, too. Our next door neighbor advised me to "use a little Roundup" for persistent weeds. I'm not the roundup type unless it's persistent poison ivy (which we do not have).

how can I make sure?

There is no way to be sure, but you've lived there for more than a year now. I don't think any fertilizers, poisons, etc last more than 6 months to a year. I'd be extra cautious though, considering your neighbor uses round up because even if you're not using any, his may run into your yard.

Round up is a chemical that kills weeds...if you do use it, wait 2 weeks after you sprayed the grass to feed it to your guinea pigs.

If you give a pet grass that's recently been sprayed it could die...

So since your neighbor uses round-up just ask him to tell you when he sprays it - then you would have to wait 2 weeks to put the piggies outside. Or you could just put them on the other side of the lawn, depending on how large your backyard is.
