Re: I just Can't

Why don't you keep them in your bedroom? A lot of our members here do.

Re: I just Can't

Maybe you could ask them if the piggies could stay in one night with you as a holiday for them.

Start your parents off slowly.

Make sure you give them a bath if they need it first and have clean bedding. You'll want avoid any source of smell if that's their primary concern.

Also, you mentioned in another thread that you use newpaper in the bottom of your hutch to line the tray. See what you can do to find another solution since newpaper tends to have a smell of it's own when it's wet and also grows bacteria quickly which feeds on the urine. Cotton works well for most people. I'd keep an eye out for old blankets or towels people are throwing away. The point would be to keep the hutch smelling as nice as possible so your parents stop associating any smell there with the piggies.

Of course, most people cover their absorbant layer with fleece which helps wick away the urine and make it easy to clean up the poop regularly.

Re: I just Can't

Shed would be WAY to hot, or cold. Think about being in a closed in shed in the middle of August. *Shivers*

Re: I just Can't

A shed meant for storing things and not for animals will not work. The design is all wrong and they will get cooked in the summer. Probably frozen in winter as well and there will be poor ventilation leading to respiratory illnesses. Sheds often get much warmer inside than it is outside so even if your summers are in range of guinea pigs limits the shed will not be. Guinea pigs need to be kept in temperatures between 60-80F(15.5-26.5C) at least.

Re: I just Can't

Yes, mine live in C&Cs in a shed. They are fine. We keep a heater on for them when it is cold and a fan when it is hot. I have the same problem as you, parents won't allow all 14 of them inside - well I don't blame them really, it would smell and we just don't have the space. I know more people who keep guinea pigs in the shed than in there house. People that I meet think I'm crazy keeping two of mine in my room, they think it's discusting.

Re: I just Can't

My mum was exsactly the same at first. make a deal with her that if you can clean the pigs out twise a week and keep them smelling really nice etc for a few months, and then ask after that if you can bring them inside for a week and make sure they dont smell, and then ask if they can come in full time. make a deal with her of some kind. my mum said NO straight away because i couldnt keep my room tidy, so we made a deal that if i kept my room tidy for 5 months then i could have the pigs in my room. So now there in my room. try that and see if it works?!.

Re: I just Can't

My mom told me I could have a guinea pig as long as he did not smell. She said the first bad scent she got he was gone. Well I got him and I kept him very clean, he took a bath every two weeks. I had air neutrializers in the room with him (not the spray) and he did not smell. Actually my room smelt better than some other rooms in the home.

Guinea pigs should only be bathed 2-3 times a year, unless they are long-haired and need an occasional "butt bath." Bathing that frequent will dry out their skin severely.
