Would a petstore cage be big enough for a hamster? I have a petstore cage for guinea pigs that is no londer in use. So I was wondering if it would be okay for a hamster? |

I haven't had hamsters in awhile, but I just looked at my "pet shop cage" that I use for quarantine (I have 4 of the darn things) that most new piggie owners who buy from pet shops are told to get and I think that hamsters can get out. Basically - anything they can get there head thru, they can squeeze the rest out. I wouldn't use the wire ones marketed for bunnies/chinchillas/piggies. You don't need to be chasing escaped hammies all over the place! |

Most guinea pig cages have 1 inch bar spacing. You need 1/2 inch or smaller for hamsters. Guinea pig cages would not work. |

It won't work "as is" but maybe you could somehow cover bars and top with some sort of tight mesh material (maybe the sort of mesh material window screens are made from) I'm not sure how that would work, or how safe it would be. Just a thought! |

Have you looked up a hamster bin? Those rock, if I ever get a hamster again I would totally make one. |

I have the Imac Fantasy cage and I would highly recommend it. Heres the link : Hamster Cage - Imac Fantasy An Imac fantasy cage with an extension kit in the perfect size - that is what I have for my syrian. You can go crazy though and have as many extentions as you like! Last edited by frankie&bennie; 07-31-09 at 06:31 pm. Reason: spelling |
