Can anyone suggest a healthy hamster food for a Syrian hamster? I read somewhere that lab blocks are best because hamsters don't pick and choose what they want to eat as they tend to do with the mixes. However, when I went to a lab food website my stomach churned when I saw pictures of lab animals. I refuse to support these companies. I need an alternative. Oxbow does not make food for hamsters. So what is a brand that is comparable to Oxbow and Kleenmama's for hamsters? Thank you in advance. |

Oxbow does make a hamster feed. I heard the Hazel feed is good but Lab blocks and a variety of grains, veggies, tofu, etc. can make up a good diet too. The Hamster Association and other sites like Hamsterific are supposed to have good care info. |

Oh Oxbow does make hamster food! I somehow missed that on their site. Thanks so much. I have another question: Do hamsters need hay 24/7 like guinea pigs do? |

I've read that people mix their own hamster feed according to the species or special needs. Can anyone suggest a website that has different recipes? |

I actually read on a hamster forum (can't give a link, they have a breeders section) that you can feed Suebee's mix if you have a quality dog food (you could probably mix Oxbow food in it if you wanted as well as/instead of dog food) in it as well. If I had a hamster I would be very cautious as to feeding Hazel Hamster food (or just about any other besides Oxbow, but Oxbow isn't that great by it self) because it has corn in it (and I do not like corn being in any pet food I would buy). As well as by-poultry meal. Now I know they are omnivores, but I know in dog and cat foods, by-products can be cancerous and not fit for consumption. I would just make Suebee's mix and mix some high quality dog food with it, giving fresh foods too, of course. Last edited by guineapigluver1; 03-18-09 at 11:39 am. |

I just realized that, although they have a breeding section, they do not in any way encourage deliberate breeding of hamsters and the section is only to help people who ended up with accidental pregnancies and litters. I got the info from Hamster Hideout Forum |
